This gym is one of the biggest I’ve been in, has sub sections for free weight, cardio, calisthenics, plate loaded machines and everything in between. It’s very open and didn’t need to fight for equipment. They have rows of squat racks and benches. Downside was the treadmills seem a little dated, the changing room is pretty small for a massive gym. And vending machines where faulty. 4* but will edit after a second trip.
Some of the new equipment is decent besides some of the plate loaded machines not being stable on the ground and bouncing but feels like there is less selection now and layout is quite poor and could do with improving. They've also taken away quite a few pieces of equipment, there's now less cable machines etc and waiting times for my training has increased which is a true shame honestly. Bench area is also now super cramped whereas before it felt spacious, feels like a pack of sardines during peak hours. I will say this is still the best gym group in Soton but definitely lost a few points here until the layout is improved
The staff are super lovely and helpful. The changing rooms were tidy and lots of lockers. They have water on tap with lots of different gym equipment to keep you busy. However. I really want to give this place a 5 star but the App used for managing the membership hasn't worked for me at all and I can't even use the Gym. After trying to resolve this for months I was told to make another email rather than them sorting out the issue on their end. They gave me a pass for the day for the inconvenience, yet no reply on the email I sent them regarding the issue. I still highly recommend them, just be aware of the faulty App.
Just had a full refurbishment... Turned a good gym bad unfortunately. Quite a few people have stated it is poorly laid out and I fully agree, the new equipment bounces when loaded up. Yes it's the matrix brand. There's equipment in there that hasn't been fully built. *Most importantly > The free weight section is so jam packed with equipment that it doesn't seem safe during peak hours. Sorry guys, but it needs sorting.
This is one amazing gym, just had all new equipment, and lots of the same machines which means no waiting around. I have been to most gyms, this one honestly ticks every box. Friendly staff and polite members. Well done guys!
So in the last year all of the below changes have happen yet they have upped the price. First time in many many years price has gone up quite a lot, oh and at the same time as the gym falling to bits, atleast 8 machines do not work! And the reason is pathetic. The gym is far too busy all the time since i think they have aloud school children to use the gym now! They literally come to the gym in there school uniform, it is soo inappropriate and far too young to be using this gym when the general public. They changed the showers which i actually rubbish, all different temperatures and you have to get a quick cold shower as soon as you press the button, you cannot get out the way in time, call this a upgrade? All the staff have changed, they come and go literally weekly! New managers just sit in the office upping the price whilst making the gym less and less suitable. I mean to have half your equipment broken for MANY MANY months if not a year you think its the right time to increase membership price? Ita just deluded Lastly just fyi i have been a member for over 10 years so im fully aware of this gyms facilities, if they dident changemanagement every few weeks im sure it would have not happen. Edit: they tried deleting my review? Get a life.. Edit: the automative response sums it up!! Completely irrelevant to the review.
Gym looks really good after renovation! Lots of kit to choose from - weights to cardio and the staff are helpful and friendly. ***2021 update below*** This gym has really gone downhill since last year. Unmotivated PT’s, the gym has lost its happy feel. One PT, the blond haired woman constantly shouts at everyone. She came in once to the studio and was telling everyone off for no reason. This is the reason I mainly go to the Southampton East gym which is MUCH BETTER than the Shirley one. The Shirley gym has to really pick up their stuff and bring the gym back to the days of its former glory like when it was back in the easyGym or Fitness First days…
Well established Gym, spacious and even with 70 people training you can still find a free device or tool or dumbbells to continue your training. Well organised and clean.
Great gym. Staff are knowledgeable and equipment is kept in good condition
Really good gym for the average gym goer. Loads of machines and really good plated machines and big floor area for free weights. Only issue like most of the chain gyms is it gets very busy.
