Great food and friendly staff. The prices are good, but be warned the starters are pretty big and may fill you up more than you bargained for. The pasta dishes are good quality and there's good variety and desserts are always tasty, moorish and satisfying plus plenty of choice.

Good food, good service by helpful staff and nothing seems to much trouble for them. Wonderful pizzas from a real pizza oven freshly made to your choice. A decent garden for the kids to play. A decent car park that seems to be full on most days. Booking is advisable as it is a popular place to eat. When I see some reviews about The Gate, I have to wonder if some people have actually been there to eat, poor food, poor service etc. I wonder if they are trying to do a disservice to a great eating house?

The gate is my favourite Italian restaurant in England. My favourite dish is saltinboca and as an Italian I am telling you is as my mother used to make it. Whenever I come to Essex it's the only place I book if I can get in. Service is a bit slow but well worth the wait. I could say a lot more about the starters and deserts but you have to try it for yourselfs.
