Fantastic. A superbly placed venue, right on the canal, with ample parking. Music events are hosted in the beautiful gardens and you can expect this to be busy on sunny days (and overcast ones, to be fair). Food is served, with a varied menu and specials. However, it is the ambience that really marks this place out as special. Two small bar areas are used for drinkers and diners alike, with another small dining area to the rear of one bar. Richly decorated throughout with enough curiosities to keep even the most digitally-addicted teen's attention from their screen... Don't miss up the opportunity to talk to the publican; as rich in character as his establishment. Ask about the history of the various family portraits on the wall...

Booking a table is essential for lunch at weekends. But (contrary to what is said on the website) don't do so by email. "We don't check those very often", we were told, 48 hours after sending it. Nevertheless helpful staff managed to find us a table and the meal was pleasant and good value. Desserts are great. Powdered cappuccino coffee best avoided, though!

Went for Sunday lunch and was made to feel incredibly welcome. Kooky surroundings lead to a unique experience. Food was good value and you'll not leave hungry but don't expect gastro pub. It's an interesting, moustache-happy den of curiosities designed to make you smile.

A traditional old canal side pub. Good ales and, for lunch, excellent range of homemade pies packed with meat. Highly recommend Sunday lunch but book to avoid disappointment. Cosy log fire for winter, large garden for summer, along side the Malton flight on The Oxford Canal. Do visit.
