The Fine Art Society

About

Founded in London in 1876 by a group of art collectors, The Fine Art Society is a leader in 19th Century, Modern British & Contemporary art.

Story

The Fine Art Society was founded in 1876 by a group of knowledgeable art collectors. Comprising a five storey town house in Mayfair, it is the oldest gallery in London still in its original location. Since its inception the gallery has always championed and worked directly with living artists, giving The Camden Town Group their first show and holding historic exhibitions that have since entered the canon of art history. The gallery was a pioneer of the solo exhibition, including James McNeill Whistler’s famous 'An Arrangement in White and Yellow' in 1883, which was a precursor to the modern white-walled contemporary art gallery.

In recent years the gallery has embraced the contemporary arts alongside its nineteenth and twentieth century heritage and increased cross-cultural links, particularly in Asia and Australia. The gallery is proud to represent an exciting group of artists and to invite other internationally recognized artists to participate in critically-engaged survey shows.

Excellent exhibition of William Tillyer here when I went.

A very disappointing experience for visitors. For an art gallery the place seems very small, with more staff than visitors. The consequence of this is that the visitors and the staff trip over each other, and the staff become very irritable because of it. You can't stand and ponder an exhibit as you would prefer to, and you constantly have to move out of the way of other people. It's no wonder the staff get bad tempered and treat the visitors as if they're irritants. Not an enjoyable experience for anybody.
