Sussex Ox

About

The Sussex Ox is a family owned country pub, with it's own organic farm. With a focus on locally sourced food and drinks, which are served to a high standard.

Story

The family owners of the pub also own a farm in the nearby countryside, so we are able to use our own beef, lamb, potatoes, and more for the daily menu.

We take locally sourced to the next level, being able to trace produce from start to finish, resulting in delicious seasonal menus.

As well as our daily menu, we also run a Chefs' Supper set three course dinner on a Thursday evening for £19.95.

Monday night is quiz night from 8pm

And we often hold live acoustic music on a Tuesday

We visited for Sunday lunch and the place was heaving when we arrived at 1pm. Booking is essential for a Sunday. Also parking can be difficult when the weather is good. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The bar had a good selection of brands and local drinks. We sat outside which is a must (weather permitting) as the surrounding downland is stunning. It's very popular with dog owners and their pets and appears very dog friendly. The food was delicious and there were lots of local/homegrown ingredients. Veggie options were limited. Overall this is a country pub you really must visit on a sunny summer afternoon. It's perfect for walks on the downs and along the Cuckmere valley.

Very welcoming. Larrie dog was much adored whilst he was here even when he decided to lie across the walkway at one point. Nice food at good prices. Wood definitely visit again.

Perhaps it was a bad day. We hadn't eaten at the Sussex Ox for about 5 years - and we used to eat here regularly as we loved the location and the quality of the food. Now we live in Brighton and we came here on a sunny evening after a rare trip in the countryside towards Eastbourne. The locations is still perfect, made even more so on a sunny evening; and the beer could not be faulted. The food though, was inconsistent. We had a meze starter which was generous and excellent, but both mains were poor. A good burger can be had in many an establishment, and there is no excuse for providing a poor example. Ours was too finely ground and so became a tight, tough burger. It was also without any relish on the bun, so flavour was totally reliant on the disappointing burger. The fish stew was better, but the fish was overcooked. The accompanying tomato and bean stew lacked seasoning and was more "home-made" in quality than rustic. The prices for meals here are at the top-end of pub prices in the area and so food should be of better quality. There are lots of good reviews so perhaps we caught the place at a bad time. However, for a Saturday evening after a glorious sunny day, 5 years ago we would have expected to be lucky to find a table but we had no problem.
