Dreadful experience. An absolute disgrace. Booked in by phone. When we got there, when we eventually found the manager we were told that the person who had booked us in had done so without authority. So we wasted many hours and much fuel travelling there. Towing a caravan for the first time. No sense of hospitality or acceptance of responsibility for the consequences of the childish 'bit of fun' by the manageress. When we had called to book the booking had been accepted by someone who had sounded convincing and no question had answered the advertised phone number. Is she not responsible for what her staff tell customers? Had to return to London. Thanks for nothing Stocking Farm!
This campsite despite being in a lovely location is ruined by the owners/caretakers. We wanted to stay here to be close to friends so put up with a lot more than we usually would. Trying to book was a nightmare, we were met with rude belligerence and someone shouting in the background to charge us extra as they ‘don’t like kids’. We arrived onsite around 2pm a perfectly reasonable time to arrive at a campsite one would think! and we couldn’t find anyone. Eventually a lady in a dressing gown came out and acted like we were a terrible inconvenience, and nearly ran us off the site as we didn’t have any cash on us to pay up front. Luckily my friend had cash! The pitches are not flat. The toilets were locked overnight so no access. We couldn’t wait to escape from this absolute shambles of a site. Nothing could make me stay on this site again… avoid avoid avoid!!
The campsite is situated in a beautiful spot. The views and scenery are really fabulous. This is the second time we have stayed on Stocking Farm, and for the second time our time there has been marred by the owner/manager/caretaker. He made the booking process unnecessarily difficult, and our first meeting with him the morning after we arrived was an absolute embarrassment. We arrived late ish as planned, and I followed my fellow campers advice to knock loudly on his door because he is deaf. This I did, numerous times, and all I could hear was a tv blasting out very loudly. Short of walking into his house, there was no way I was going to get his attention, so I gave up trying and decided to employ some initiative. ie set up on the pitch of our choosing as there were many available spots. Fast forward to 10am the following morning, he waddles across the site screeching at the top of his squeaky voice 'what the bloody hell do you think you're doing setting up where ever you want'? He got right in my face while carrying on like this. He basically thought that we'd arrived that morning and set up without his permission. It took numerous attempts for him to grasp what had actually happened. That we arrived late as planned and set up where we did because he didn't answer his door. He also showed complete lack of respect for our vehicle by leaning on an opened door, and I was forced to manually move him because he was so irate he wouldn't listen to our protests. He made a complete and total fool of himself. After he buggered off and we calmed down a bit we couldn't help but laugh at the sad old fool. Another amusing traite of his, is that he makes a massive theatrical show of being put out when asked the simplest of questions. Such as 'where do we empty the chemical toilet?' He huffed and puffed and walked me over to the spot where a simple point with a finger would have sufficed, and then proceeded to tell me how to do it, as though it was my first time. We noticed that he did this with everyone, and it became quite entertaining for us to witness. The toilet and shower facilities are truly disgusting. The walls are bare breeze block, and although that in itself isn't a big deal, or particularly unusual, the amount of mould and filth and cobwebs is well out of order. When you first walk into them you are faced with a scene which you might find in a horror movie. It really is that bad. see photo's. Also the meter eats your 20p if it has been isolated as the many signs insist that it should be. If I could review the place separately I would give the location 4 stars, the facilities 2 and the old fool none. If it weren't for the ideal location I would have told him what I think of him and buggered off elsewhere, but because we like it in that part of the world so much that I bit my tongue and let him ramble on like the cantankerous old idiot he is.
A good site convenient for walks and restaurants
Very unpleasant reception from the owners, who went on to shout at us to leave because we didn't want to park under a low tree for two nights! We were happy to go , awful awful hosts
First time here. Brilliant place. Great location. The Owner couldn't be more helpful. Helped us park up and advised on where the sun rises/sets so we were in a good position. Showed us all the site amenities then mowed our pitch before we parked. Yes it's basic but it's camping. Will definitely be coming back again.
Great quaint caravan site. Lovely views, friendly staff, great walks and lovely eateries near by. X
Excellent value great great location friendly owner 5*
Very friendly owners as peaceful place, very good price and amazing area for hiking
A small site in an idyllic setting. However, rude staff and an awful pitch. We arrived in the late afternoon and were told where to pitch our motorhome by a very friendly lady. The pitch was tight - we had to park sideways or would have been overhanging the guy ropes of a tent. Later we heard a man's voice outside loudly complaining about how we had parked. I went out and spoke to him, he said he didn't have a problem with us, he idenitified himself as the boss but proceeded to denigrate his daughter the friendly lady in misogynistic terms. The site is too small for the number of pitches. The showers and toilets were basic and dirty. The owner rude and boorish.
