Starter of mozzarella salad was poor for 6.25, main of sea bass was the wrong sea bass but we'd waited so long I would have eaten nicely pan fried cardboard so just took it. It was tasty but the bass was tiny. Sticky toffee pudding was big and good. Staff were very nice indeed. Music and ambience were also good.

Just had my best Christmas dinner of the year at the Star and Garter, Linlithgow. Food was fantastic, service was superb (thanks Jennifer) and very, very good value for money at just £19.99 for three courses. The prawn cocktail was gorgeous, with the sauce exactly as I like it. The main course ( I went for traditional turkey and trimmings) was piping hot with the turkey lovely and moist and done to perfection. The vegetables were perfect and the helpings tremendously generous. I had just enough room to enjoy the stodge-free Christmas pudding and excellent custard, washed down by a creamy coffee. Jennifer couldn't have been more attentive and was very knowledgeable about the various wines. My dining partner wanted a less generous plateful than me and Jennifer attended to that with enthusiasm. Her friendly, attentive nature only enhanced what was a fantastic evening. Great company and a great meal. What more could I ask from Santa. A perfect night indeed.

The Thai fish cakes are fabulous. No breadcrumbs bonus! just loaded with quality fish bursting with flavour. lovely warm open fireplace. We were looked after by lovely friendly staff. Thanks guys we'll be back.

Stayed one night. Very nice clean comfortable room. Had evening guests meal in restaurant which was also very nice. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Would recommend on both counts.

Disappointing visit. Service struggled with our order (a newish member of staff?), meals where OK, unfortunately poor vegetarian/vegan options - we felt our meals did not reflect great value for money, bit basic and sides where poor and it all really lacked any finesse in presentation. Restaurant was really drafty and our party of six all left pretty disappointed.
