Witnessed a beautiful event of guard change. I would recommend watching a your guide video from you tube about how to see the guard change. This is the place where it starts.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
We came here to see the beginning of the ceremony of changing of the guards in the palace. It is recommended to check the website for the days on which the ceremony is held. And also arrive half an hour before the start to get a spot. After the beginning you can walk down the street to the palace.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
We were here to see the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace. TONS of people everywhere. The guards leave St James's Palace and goes to Buckingham and back. The presentation was good but difficult to see all of huge crowds to battle.Visited onWeekdayWait time1 hr+Reservation recommendedYes

If you have experienced the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace then this is the other end for the complete experience. It starts and ends here. Definitely worth waiting.Visited onWeekdayWait time30–60 minReservation recommendedNo
I didn't go inside the palace. My only experience here is as a place to watch a component of the change of guard ceremony. It's a good option for that, although it was crowded.Visited onWeekday
We were on the way to the St James park to visit the playground but suddenly heard music coming from the palace. It turned out the guards were practicing here. To us there were a lot less people here then when the changing of the guard takes place at Buckingham palace. As with any places where you can see the guards perform it does get pretty crowded so it’s hard to get a good viewing spot, especially for our 3 yo. You can still hear the music loudly while playing in the park.
I enjoyed the scenery. It was a pleasure to see the guards.
There is no access to the palace. So you can only watch it from the outside. Or buy a private expensive tour. As long as it is the oldest palace in London, we still decided to come over, but do not buy private tour.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
