Story

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is a National Health Service hospital situated in Northfield, Birmingham, England. It specialises in bone and joint problems.HistoryThe Royal Orthopaedic Hospital was formed from the union of two hospitals, and opened in 1909 at The Woodlands, Northfield. The building, dating from 1840, was donated to the Birmingham Cripples Union by George Cadbury, who then moved into Northfield Manor House.A new 8-million-pound out-patient department was opened in May 2011. Its 24 consultation rooms, treatment rooms and other facilities replaced the temporary out-patients buildings that had been used since 1992.PerformanceThe trust expects a deficit for 2014-15 of £200,000 and in 2015/6 a £2m deficit target relies on delivering “challenging” savings of £2.8m.It was named by the Health Service Journal as one of the top hundred NHS trusts to work for in 2015. At that time it had 831 full time equivalent staff and a sickness absence rate of 4.56%. 84% of staff recommend it as a place for treatment and 67% recommended it as a place to work.It decided to stop providing paediatric surgery after the West Midlands Quality Review Service report concluded, ”that paediatric inpatient surgery would be better delivered in a hospital setting with access to extensive centralised care facilities at all times”.

What a fantastic hospital. The staff were incredibly friendly, kind reassuring, everybody from the porters, student nurses, ward nurses, surgeons, anaesthetist, physios were superb. I wouldn't have had better treatment at the most expensive private hospital that the treatment here. I really can't speak highly enough of these brilliant people
Absolutely Fantastic Hospital I had a scheduled appointment to X-ray my Knee last Week however recently my Knee had become worse extreme Pain . I came for the X-ray & from the reception to the X-ray staff and other staff reception members and Nurses they all were Superb friendly smiling & with CARE patient focused which is so important . After my X-rays I met a amazing Consultant Doctor Leon McKenzie hope my memory of his name is right he works with Head Surgeon Mr Baloch He explained my knee issue went through all the checks on my knee then explained all necessary future solutions in terms of operating which I found very helpful Dr McKenzie was compassionate , understanding and listened to my concerns regarding my Knee with professionalism and humility but I was so impressed that he understood my current severe pain my knee which was unbearable and with consultation decided to apply a steroid injection on my knee and with 4 days so far it has made a difference and my life and mobility is much improved . I also received today a follow up text for a further MRI Scan on my knee for the potential future operation and as we all know many hospitals in the West Midlands are never so quick so once again I was pleasantly surprised in the excellent exceptional efficiency of the ROH ! Thanks again Hospitals do get a bad image at times but this ROH is truly magnificent from its layout to its staff and its Specialist Doctors! Most importantly the Understanding and smiles the hospital Creates by its own Staff is a credit to themselves ! Well Done Wasim Ahmad
I can’t fault the care and support I have received at this hospital. Wonderful caring staff and a very professional approach to the patients. Special thanks to Sophie in HDU ,Shamaria and Con in ward 4 and Rebecca in Physio. Thank you for making my stay a cheerful one.
Had a epidural nerve block in my lower back here yesterday. The staff and Team that that treated me were amazing. I cant thank them enough for their support and putting me at ease during the procedure. Absolute saints .Thank you so much
This is a good hospital, made up of some amazingly skilled surgeons, but unfortunately, the staff answering the main phones on the switchboard I have found to be rather unpleasant, and this is on more than one occasion over the past three to four years. When a person contacts the hospital to be put through to a particular department, that is what they expect; not a list of personal questions about the patient It really isn't their business or for the person answering the phone to cut me off mid-sentence. This is basic stuff so it would be wonderful if this was taken on board for the future!
I am 6 weeks post spinal surgery under the care of Mr Hassan and his team. I waited a long time for this surgery but I have to say once in they were amazing, right from the top, surgical team, the Nurses in HDU, Staff on Ward 3, two lovely Physio's, the staff who brought food and drinks, not forgetting Porters. It was a painful operation but they made me as comfortable as possible for my 5 day stay. Cannot thank them enough, great bunch of people.
I chose this hospital as others said 16 to 21 weeks to see doctor. Iphoned this.morning told maybe 12 weeks for triage it said on nhs web site 3 to 4 weeks to see doctor so how long for operation next year. I thought it would be faster at this hospital big mistake was called back told it had been triage and passed to specialist phoned today still open referral wait 12 weeks what how why would give 0
I am extremely impressed with the whole team of many individuals who took such good care of me during my time at the Royal orthopaedic, I was treated with respect, courtesy and kindness at all times by every member of staff, nurses and all. I cannot express how truly grateful I am. I thank each and every one of you. I would like to add that I am very impressed with the follow up care following my surgery. I feel I am in safe hands and the professionals are keeping a close eye on my progress
This hospital is broken. You can get a scan quite quickly but want to find out the results. 2 weeks sir... Oh no sorry it's 4 weeks.... Oh actually we have a backlog it's 8 weeks.... We don't know when your results will be ready. Not fit for purpose. Edit:Reply said to call patient experience team. I did. No response and they said they will call back within 2 days. Joke
Mr Sharma is an excellent consultant and surgen. Had a total knee replacement with robotic surgery in January 2024. My recovery is good and would highly recommend Mr Sharma. He discusses everything with you. Thank you to all the staff at the hospital who looked after me both before and after operation. Stayed just two nights in hospital. I was soon back to my Line Dancing.
