The Prospect of Whitby is on my must visit list every time I'm in London. Founded in 1520 as The Pelican, the Prospect has its original slate floor. It has a lot of seating with river views...both inside and outside. The food has improved since the pandemic and is now excellent.nIf you want a more formal dining experience, sit upstairs either in the Smugglers Bar Captain Kidd was a regular here or on the river side. Princess Margaret's favorite table is by the window on the river side upstairs. We're quite happy to eat downstairs looking out at the river traffic. Kids love this.nI had the Fish Ragout. It was excellent with a lovely hake fillet and delicious vegetable sauce. The traditional steak pie and cod and chips are nice. Great chips here.nBut the biggest surprise was they've added Eaton Mess to the dessert selection. OMG!nIt was memorable with lots of thick cream and a wonderful blackberry coulis. We're still talking about how great the Mess was.
What a little gem! Taking a brisk walk through Wapping I discovered a pub/inn dated back to 1520. The wooden interior and naval decor takes you back to a place when establishments had character and a sense of purpose. Overlooking the river Thames...the sounds of waves crashing, the aroma of the sea as the breeze blows in...filling bygone memories. The scent of fresh food is delivered plentiful and with care. It wasn't so busy...hence a secret one discovers.
I ordered chefs special- halibut, I was expecting something more special, specially for the price I paid, I ended up basically with tasty fish and chips. Apart from that the service/atmosphere and location is very good on a nice day as it was the river view and breeze is earth going to this pub. Chef who served us was very friendly as well.
Part of our pub crawl. The chips were cold and we were surprised it came out so quickly. Beer selection is good. The bar area is nice and inviting. More seating upstairs and outside. Atmosphere inside was great with character of an old pub. Interesting to see the hanging rope outside where pirates used to be hanged. Great history. Not sure I will be back for food.
Fabulous, historical pub in the heart of the East End given the Greene King treatment!nThe pub was heaving when we arrived 4pm on a Saturday afternoon but luckily we had booked a table, meaning no need to find a table & that our table was upstairs in a beautiful room with fabulous river views was a massive bonus!nThere are tonnes of historical items spread all over this amazing old building, inside & out, & then there's the wonderful alleyway that leads to the steps that take you down onto the Thames beech where history reveals itself as the tide goes out!nOh & the food was fantastic pub grub too!!
