Such a lovely place to wonder around and just sit for a while. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city this is a quiet place. Read of the people who died saving others. So beautiful and peaceful.
One of London’s secret oases amongst the thronging noise of the City. This is a very tranquil place and is beautifully laid out. The undoubted highlight is what must be the unique presence of a tableau of commemorations to those who lost their lives trying to save others. Almost all date to the 1890s and 1900s but they are written so simply but movingly it’s hard not to be affected all there years later. It’s a lovely homage to those who made these selfless sacrifices and on its own it makes this park worth visiting.
Parks are normally recharging spots for your soul, that is their intended purpose. But although this particular park isn't very large, it has a wall full of plaques dedicated to the acts of bravery carried out by everyday heroes from time long ago. This recharges your spirit in a different way entirely. It is refreshingly inspirational to know that such people lived and enshrined their names into history by doing the right and noble thing. I recommend taking the time to read each one and basking in the feeling that goodness, nobility and bravery exist in every time and place.
This is a lovely quiet and secluded park just round the back of St. Paul’s Cathedral. This is my go to destination to have my lunch when I have a walk around London. It’s beautiful in the summer when the flowers have all bloomed and it’s a little oasis in the middle of the City of London. The other reason I first visited was to look at some of the plaques and tributes on display under the covered area of people who have done something very heroic. Some of the stories are truly amazing and heart breaking. It’s a nice place to take a small family for a picnic as there is plenty of grass to put a blanket down. I would highly recommend a visit. I’ll be going back in May
Interesting and busy little park close to St Paul's Cathedral. It's built on the site of the former Post Office HQ. In 1900, it became the location of the George Frederic Watts Memorial to Self Sacrifice. There is a small covered area which houses memorial tablets to people everyday heroes who sacrificed their lives to save others. Some are young children who died while trying to save a sibling; others are ordinary people who lost their lives in acts of heroism and altruism. The most recent addition to the commemorative tiles which tell the story of these selfless acts is that of Leigh Pitt who, in 2007, died while trying to rescue a child who was drowning in a canal. It's a very poignant memorial and if you are in the St Paul's area, definitely worth visiting.
Lovely gem of a park interesting lunch time walk.
What a hidden gem. Whatever you see online doesn’t do any justice to the beauty of this garden. The sound of the water combined with the sounds of the bees in such a busy place in London hits differently. The place is located between building and seems very small and hidden at first sight, once you’re in you can feel the fountains and the smell of the flowers everywhere. Beautiful place!
A lovely little garden tucked away in the heart of the City of London with an intimate and peaceful vibe.
A beautiful little park at the center of London. This park is dedicated to those unsung heroes who put their lives on the line to save others. People from all walks of life are honored here. There are some very old plaques as well as a few new ones. Ages are varied, from children to adults. It was heartbreaking reading the information on the plaques, especially when the soul lost was that of a child. The park is very clean and kept up. The noise of the traffic doesn't interfere with the serenity of the park. There are plenty of benches on which to sit and have a lunch. Wheelchair accessible.
