It’s is the biggest city in Isle of Skye. Isle of Skye has about 13,000 people and 650,000 visitors every year.. Lovely town, great parking, lots of lovely shops, bakeries, cafes & restaurants. Lots to see & do.
Portree is overcrowded with insufficient facilities for the volume of visitors. Restaurants do not serve meals from 4 to 5 pm, bar service only. Way too busy and noisy for any kind of relaxation.
Everyone told us this place was a must. We did not find it very interesting. The colorful buildings are down steep stairs and they are all hotels. There was some shopping on the main street, but not enough for the drive there. Bars/restaurants had nothing special. We spent maybe an hour walking around to see what all the fuss was over.... I wouldn't recommend. There are other places more worthy of valuable vacation time.
The arrival / departure point for most arriving to Portree. The bus stop is located here. Usually there will be some kind of music playing, whether it bagpipes or flutes, and a small stall or two set up. Surrounding the square are a few businesses, such as a bakery, a hotel, cafes, charity shops etc. A busy central point of the village with plenty of character and atmosphere.
