Popped in to this shop for a nice lunch with family. Servers were lovely though there was a bit of waiting to be seated and for the food, this is unsurprising seeing as it was a busy lunchtime. We ordered a regular haddock and chips and a seafood mixed platter. The portions were good and the food was tasty and authentic. It was slightly expensive, paying around £12 per meal and £3 for soft drinks. They also had a lovely timeless decor and served a lovely cream soda by Ben Shaws. Would recommend to anyone nearby.
This place is a must try if you’re looking to try out a classic fish and chips. It has a charming ambience reminiscent of an old diner. You can choose between cod and haddock and a few more others but I wasn’t able to take a photo of the menu. It’s cheaper to order for takeout than dine in but we wanted to enjoy our first fish and chips fresh so we opted to dine in. Our fish came our perfectly cooked, batter was crispy yet the fish inside remained juicy. It’s a tad bit under seasoned for me but nothing a sprinkle of salt and malt vinegar couldn’t fix. As you can see in the photos, the portions are huge! Unless you came with an appetite, one order could easily feed two so bear that in mind. 9/10 highly recommended
The fish & chips here is excellent. Fishes are caught at 1am, reaching the restaurant at 7am & ready to be served at 11am. We were lucky that the halibut was available today, the fish was super fresh, though the flesh was a bit dry which is typical of this fish, I could savour the intensity of the natural savoury taste from the fish. Every mouthfeel was very satisfying. As for the Haddock, texture more flaky, juicy, moist, smooth, the taste was creamy with a simpler fresh fish taste compared to the Halibut. One must try side is the mushy bean which was really tasty. The homemade tartar sauce was also excellent. Definitely recommended!!
Rating: Poppies Fish & Chips is an overrated tourist trap. The fish and chips were nothing special—bland and not worth the hype . The service was poor and unwelcoming, which made the experience even worse. The place was overcrowded and felt rushed, with little attention given to customers. With so many better options for fish and chips in London, I wouldn’t recommend this spot unless you’re only interested in the novelty factor. Save your time and money, and find a place with better food and service.
Great location which makes it always very busy even though they have lots of tables we had to wait for over 20 minutes to be seated. They have two doors one for indoor seating and one door for takeout. Yeh, better then average fish, but the chips weren’t that great, the worst part was the tartar sauce it came in tiny like breakfast jam jar and didn’t really taste of anything. Vegetarian options: Only one vegetarian dish Dietary restrictions: Not suitable for gluten free Kid-friendliness: Warm and friendly Wheelchair accessibility: Yes
Poppies is a highly rated and must try fish and chips joint. Their staff is quite polite and helpful. Loved the haddock, amazing chips, and their tartare sauce too. We tried the curry sauce as well. Bit on the expensive side but definitely a must try.Food: 4/5
I had a blast at Poppies, Fish and Chips in Soho! The atmosphere is lively and fun, perfect for a casual meal out. The fish & chips were incredibly juicy and the fish was delightfully crispy and fresh. However, I’d steer clear of the deep fried cod roe; it wasn’t to my taste. Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable experience overall!Food: 5/5
The gentle waiter recommended us haddock with homemade mushy peas and it was a good choice, the classic one. We didn’t need to queue and the service was correct. A traditional fish & chips in London and affordable for almost all budgets. 08/09/2024, 20:15
A London institution Poppies is a must for the quintessential British dish of fish and chips. It's got a kitchy old school diner vibe with vintage pictures all over the wall. The staff were wonderful, service was quick and very friendly. The formenntiomed fish and chips were phenomenal. Best meal I had in London and absolutely worth flying across the pond for. I wanted cod but they only had haddock which was fine. The fish was cooked perfectly, crispy on the outside and juicy and tender inside. I also got a steak pie and mushy peas which were very good. One downside is the price. I know it's London but $54 for a meal does seam little high. If you have a large family be prepared to spend a small fortune to eat here. Aside from that though I highly recommend Poppies. There's also a take away counter if you don't want to dine in.
During my first ever visit to London, I had to get fish and chips. After some research, I decided I wanted to hit up Poppies and I was not disappointed. The "chips" were amazing! I don't even like fish like that, but during my 4 day stay I went to this spot twice. The salt and vinegar was a nice touch. Wish they didn't charge for ketchups packets but it is what it is.
