CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF A LONDON FRINGE THEATRE Fringe theatre in London is spectacularly unique. Odd spaces from Warehouse, to rooms above Pubs are used to put on stunning and innovative performances. But Pentameters is a stunning example. Yes, it is indeed above a Pub but it's certainly no small room. It seats 60. It's been run by the same couple since 1968, so is about to celebrate it's 50th anniversary next year 2018. You enter the establishment up some rickety stairs disabled accessible this is most definitely not and the seating arrangements are often styled for the performance. Living room sofa's make up the front row, armchairs and cushions and steps make for the rest of the auditorium, though it can be staged with normal plastic stacking chairs too I believe. Everything feels ramshackled, begged, borrowed or stolen, but it feels none the worse for it, in fact it adds a real sense of adventure to attend the theatre. There are no catering facilities once you enter the theatre, but you're welcome to bring things in with you. The Three Horse Shoe pub below it, can provide all your alcohol requirements, but if you're looking for an Ice Cream or Hot Chocolate there's Venchi Cioccolao Gelato a small Italian Chain with two outlets in London on the corner 2 minutes away, that does an excellent and delicious selection. The very nature of the space, means it would be impossible to have an interval, so all productions run from start to finish. Generally lasting anything up to two hours. It's normally used for revivals of classic productions, but the most recent play for me, was a new work written by first time playwright, Imogen Palmer and entitled Convergence 8th April 2017. Everyone, who ever visits London usually has Theatre as a must do activity on their list and unlike it's West End counterparts, this venue is exceptional value, with tickets never being more expensive than £13 each. It's situated in Hampstead within minutes of the tube, so a trip can always been conjoined with a walk on the Heath or following a Pint in The Flask. A simple visit to the theatre would be worth the cost of admission alone, but catch a great show and this is definitely the best London Fringe experience in town.
Lovely it’s great, cosy venue where the ushers will help you fit through the awkward creaky staircase into the cushioned comfortable armchairs in this charming theatre that hasn’t changed and offers Theatre performances as good as any anywhere at a fair price, you will love this.
Got to play couple of songs there during their Sunday Open Mic Night in March 4, 2023. Amazing venue with awesome hosts and super cool audience. I hope to visit and perform there again next time I’m in London.
Small theater with an amazing vibe!! Located on top of a Pub, you take some steep stairs and enter a room when you feel transported to whatever play they are presenting. The theater is small, just 3 rows with some vintage chairs and the decoration include posters and photos from their glorious past. Tickets are not expensive and the people will give you a really warm welcome : I great place for the arts!!!
This is a long-running theatre above a pub in Hampstead. There are some steep stairs to access the theatre so no good for wheelchair users or those who struggle to climb stairs. The theatre space itself is quirky and a little dark as you clamber over pieces of set and the odd step to access your seat. However, Leonie will make you feel very welcome, you will be among other theatre enthusiasts and the quality of the production I saw was excellent. It's a bargain way to get your theatre fix.
A wonderful and charming theatre in the heart of Hampstead. Plays and workshops are held during the week. But on Sunday nights there's an excellent evening called The Moon At Night, with an eclectic mix of artists, poets, musicians and story tellers.
Dont expect comfort. It is very basic and yo long stairs with no toilets but has been a treasure in offering a space for writers and emerging dramatists for more than 59 years
Warm and welcoming somewhat eccentric environment with excellent performance. Seating area resembled somebody's grandparents living room.
A wonderful space where anything can happen,it is like a journey into the rabbit hole!
Intimate theatre with a shabby friendly environment. Celebrating 50 years since opening.
