Commonly referred to as the 'Gateway of the North' by Southgate locals, this station boasts wooden panels and an inaccessible spiral staircase, giving it a charming 'Victoriana feel'.
Trains come every 15 minsnSmall stationnBuses that serve this station are:nn221n232n382nSL1nN91
The station is old, dilapidated, and suffers from a lack of investment. There are no real facilities and the information screen at the ticket booth often doesn't work. The trains are infrequent for London, especially at weekends.nnDon't swipe in before you get to the platform - if your train is cancelled then you'll need to swipe out again if you intend to get the tube instead, and you'll be charged for a journey you haven't made.nnThe only good thing about this station is the fact that the journey into central London is much quicker than the tube.
If ever, for just one moment, you carry the notion that Great Northern railways cares one jot about its passengers then a visit to New Southgate on a rainy rush hour morning will put you right. Inadequate cover, puddles forming into small lakes the length of the platform, inaudible announcements, decrepit stairs, obviously no disabled access.
Not the best train provided here, expected considering the operator and the station isn't that well either. No step free access provided to the platforms and said platforms, despite having decent size canopies, are prone to flooding when it gets a bit rainy.nnThere's a ticket office on the bridge which is made to look like some sort of blast shelter for some reason as well as a ticket machine and even a car park, with some...questionable prices. Local buses stop by but you're much better off using the tube into London than the trains here.
