Museum Of The Jewellery Quarter

About

A perfectly preserved jewellery workshop offering a unique glimpse of working life in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter

Story

For more than 80 years, Smith & Pepper produced jewellery from this workshop. Explore this extraordinary industrial time capsule on a lively guided tour. Here you will find things left as they were on Smith & Pepper's last working day.
Gather round the main jeweller's bench to watch a demonstration of the traditional skills of this fine trade and discover what it was like to work here.
The Museum also has an interactive gallery exploring the 'Story of the Jewellery Quarter'. Find out why the close-knit trade became established over 200 years ago and how Birmingham got its own Assay Office. Glittering displays reveal a broad array of locally made fine and intricate products.
The 'Earth's Riches' gallery showcases jewellery made from material found in the natural world, from whale tooth and coral to diamond and platinum.

A great little museum. William the tour guide was excellent - very entertaining and interesting. An hour well spent. Lovely and warm as well, which is what you want in February. It was almost eerie to see the papers and machines how the last workers left them in the 80s. It really brought the era to life for me. Good selection of coasters in the gift shop.
Really interesting step back in time. They provide brief tours that provide a thorough background of the era and the people who worked at and ran the jewelry factory. It also includes several demonstrations using the antique equipment to make simple jewelry right in front of you! I’m really glad I went and recommend it.
Absolutely fantastic. The guides are wonderful and really bring the place alive with their story telling, and the museum itself a fascinating place to step into; like it's been frozen in time. If you're visiting Birmingham or you live here and have never visited this is an absolute must-see attraction. Book a tour around the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter and experience what it was like to work in the Smith and Pepper jewellery factory in 1899. The building remains exactly as it did since the day the factory closed for good, the workers tools left sprawled on the work benches with jewellery littering the shelves. The museum tells the story of Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter, including a demonstration of jewellery making techniques, and a tour around the actual factory itself.
This is a wonderful little museum, very family friendly and with lots of interest! Plenty to see and enjoy in the museum, but the tour is extra special! Getting to see the inner workings of jewellery making in the 50s and 60s was a real eye opener, and our wonderful tour guide gave lots of additional interesting tidbits and demonstrations. A nice range of gifts too, from 25p for a little cut out of a dog which you see the guide do! to high end jewelry from a number of designers. Highly recommended for a morning or afternoon in Birmingham
I went on one of the guided tours and I really enjoyed it. The guide was amazing and I learned an incredible amount. The demonstration was very interesting and I really like how everything was in exactly the same place as it was in 1981.I would really recommend visiting this museum especially with children.
What a treasure! This museum is absolutely fascinating and the hour long tour is a bargain at just £7. Judy our guide was really informative and really brought the former jewellery manufacturers to life!
Amazing insights into jewellery making in the heart of the jewellery making industry of the UK. A real time capsule as the factory is as it was left in 1981...untouched
Very welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. The staff were all very proud of their delightful re-furbished shop and reception. Our second visit, and the museum just gets better !!!
Very interesting place, a must place to visit on anyone's list of venues to visit while in Birmingham
The museum of the Jewellery Quarter was a pleasant surprise, a real gem! The tour guide gently talked us through the history of the company on which the museum is established today Smith and Pepper, a jewellery manufacturing firm which traded between 1899 and 1981. The tour visit tells the daily life of the workers of companies like S&P, mixed with information on society and customs at the time, and - of course - many details about the specific task of the jewellers who worked there. The tour guide even shared some jewellery techniques while sitting at the same table where the company employees did it back in their time!. Beautiful and dedicated tour, which can be continued in a self-guided manner in the various exhibition rooms available within the same building.
