Good place to bed down for the night.

We spent one night at the Church Farm Guest house and do confirm some of what has been written below regarding the owners. However, the room was comfortable, the price reasonable and the location good. Suitable for those who just need a place to sleep overnight while enjoying the Forest of Dean and its attractions.

We had a great weekend in the area, visiting the Cardiff International White Water centre on Saturday then taking some canoes along the river on the Sunday near Symonds Yat. Church Farm Guest House is situated in an excellent location and is easy to find in the middle of Mitchel Troy, and close to Monmouth. The guest house is what you would expect from a B&B in the area, with adequate (and sometimes improvised) facilities, reasonable pricing and several years out of date. Derek and Rosemary strike you as the type of couple who have sold everything and moved to Wales to set up a B&B as they couldn't cope with the real world, and the thought of having to accommodate people in their home every day in order to continue living has worn them down. Arriving and being shown to our room felt like trespassing on someone's property and the proprietor could barely bring herself to shake my hand, although she did allow us to check in at 10pm on the Friday night (as we had a long drive from London). Breakfast was stingy, unwelcoming, and some couples had to double-up on 4-person tables. Derek, the owner, was miserable and at times rude, despite our efforts to be friendly. The room itself was generally satisfactory, with ensuite facilities and a powerful shower (although the shower head was badly blocked with limescale). Peripheral facilities were what you would expect, a freeview box that didn't respond to the remote control, no mains splitter next to the bed (so you could not watch TV and have the lamp on at the same time), old creaky beds, loose toilet seat, naff curtains etc; but none of that really made any difference to our stay. On checking out we found that unlike 99.9% of businesses on the planet, they do not take card, meaning we had to travel to the nearest town to get a couple of hundred pounds cash out. Derek, the owner, demanded that either one of use stay behind or that we leave all of our stuff behind whilst one of us go and find some cash. He was very rude and treated us as if we were going to run away. He was also quite upset that we had sent our deposit cheque (in order to book your room at this B&B you have to send a £30 cheque in the post!) without our full postal address and demanded that we 'register' in the book immediately so that he had our full postal address. This put a slight downer on the trip and left us feeling with a slightly tarnished view of the guest house. Overall, if you are planning on staying in the area, there is lots to do and much natural beauty to explore, so we would highly recommend it. I would not recommend Church Farm Guest House though, as there are plenty of other B&Bs in the area at the same price point, but with owners who will welcome you and make an effort to accommodate your needs.
