Punch House

Story

The Punch House is a public house and hotel located at Agincourt Square, Monmouth, Wales. The pub serves food and has live music every Friday evening.HistoryThe Punch House was originally a coaching inn called The Wine Vaults. Records show the pub was in existence in 1769. The pub was known as The Punch House from around 1832 but did not change to The Punch House officially until 1896. In 1822 the licensee was John Powell. While in the possession of the Powell family, the business also traded as a wines and spirits merchant. The pub that stands today was originally two pubs until the late 1990s. At that date the Punch House was extended to include The Bull public house which occupied the adjoining premises. The Bull itself was originally known as The Black Bull in the 1800s. The internal door which now unites the two lounges downstairs is said to be the door of Monmouth County Gaol. The building has been a Grade II listed building since 15 August 1974. It has a stucco frontage with chamfered quoins and a half hipped Welsh slate roof. The elevation is continuous with that of the Bull Inn which has a slightly lower roofline. The Punch House is one of the pubs in Agincourt Square who started using QRpedia codes as part of the MonmouthpediA project in March 2012. Currently the Punch House is one of the 250 pubs that are owned by Brains Brewery.

Would have liked to have some food here. But we walked in as a group of 5 and the bar tender asked rudely what are you here for!!! And looked us up and down and continued to say they didn't have a table. I understand if they didn't have a table but you don't need to be rude about it.
Really nice welcoming public house.nThe two ladies that manage it are very helpful.nGood entertainment booked.nJust all round good pub to go.nhighly recommend if you ate in Monmouth .
Service was amazing. From the moment we walked In to the moment we left. Made to feel at home and welcomed. Food was very tasty and perfect portion sizes.
Really friendly staff who are so helpful and kind, couldn’t do enough to accommodate my food allergies and even gave us some raw veg for our weaning baby. Delicious burgers and top notch salad, my wife had the lasagne which she also said was delicious and really cheesy. Thank you so much for making our Monday night.
Great visit here in July 2024. We were walking Offas Dyke and had booked to stay after walking the leg from Abergavenny.nnOn arrival the landlady greeted us, despite being mucky and smelly from our 22 mile hike, and having an equally wet and muddy dog among us, we were made extremely welcome.nIt was a midweek day and we arrived fairly late 20:00 so the kitchen was shortly closing, we ordered our food while a staff member went and bagged us a table and put a dog bed from the stack next to the front door under it, along with some water and dog treats.nnWe went up and settled in while food cooked, we were given towels for the dog once we'd washed him off and really made to feel welcome.nnThe food was great and a beer was equally good, we thoroughly enjoyed our evening in the bar which had a nice atmosphere.nnThe beds were comfortable and we all slept well. mutt included. It's not 5 star luxury but it's a really nice comfortable place to sleep with good food at a sensible price, and it was exactly what we needed during our week of hiking.nnThe only minus point for me was they advertise breakfast but it's room service which I hate I find eating in your room just weird, as the bar is not open in the morning. This should have been made clear on booking so we could line something else up ahead of time. In the event I phoned a contact who runs a fishery on our walking route that day and he had some lovely cooked breakfasts for us after we'd got an hours walking under our belts.
