A beautiful small museum. I first went here over 15 years ago, and it's had such a upgrade since then. The museum is based in the control tower, and it goes into plenty of detail about RAF Martlesham and the surrounding area. Very nice volunteers, a small car park. Well worth a visit and put a donation in after the visitVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

Fascinating relic. Quite small but very interesting, lovely people that run it. They give up their time, and are so passionate about it. Free parking and entry, but only fair to make a donation.

Very easy to find and plenty of parking. The chaps volunteers? are friendly and full of information and stories. Plenty of things to look at as it is an old RAF and USAAF site.
Martlesham Heath Control Tower was built in 1917 during the early days of the Air Corps, then RAF. The airbase was already active & established during the rush to defend the nation, leading up to the Battle of Britain. For a period during WW2, Martlesham Heath airbase was occupied by USAF aircrews. The Control Tower is very well preserved & can always be appreciated from outside, even when closed. Unfortunately, because of development of the rest of what was the airbase, the building's setting has lost its context. Nonetheless, it's still possible to find traces of the former airfield, dotted around the grounds that have been developed as industrial & housing estates. Marker stones placed around the original airfield are still in-situ, as are some outbuildings. The Control Tower remains as the historically most important main building. It was at Martlesham Heath that emigre Russian Prince Obolensky, was sent to serve as a volunteer pilot during WW2. He was killed on-site when his Hawker Hurricane crashed on landing in 1940. A monument dedicated to the 24 year old can be found in Cromwell Square; he was buried in Ipswich Cemetery...
Lovely morning out, we picked a good day as they had a fair on with an old car display along with a local RC flying club had a display of model planes amongst other displays and food stalls . The lovely weather helped.
Always have a very positive experience when at the Martlesham heath Control Tower, and all the people who come to visit really enjoy the experience, and also as we as a team at the tower are in the process of giving the place a bit of a smarter appearance, we all hope it will be very popular with all who come to visit or are just passing by.
Really nice, enjoyed it very much. Sadly insufficient toilets for today's car show but it's appreciated what they're doing.
