Free museum with excellent history of HMS Ganges. Host was ex-button boy and people in the museum have some amazing stories. Exhibits in every corner and stories and history every single step. Highly recommended whether you are of naval background or not, or if you are from overseas and wish to understand more about British Naval history.

The museum is a great resource for any one who served at Ganges or has family or friends who served there. The museum staff are all very helpful and friendly.
Really good visit. A massive thank you to Tony and June for opening up for us. Brought back some memoirs mostly good ones. I would recommend a visit to all Ganges Boys
Homely, well stocked local museum, ran by enthusiastic volunteers. It is sited on the coast at Shotley, across the water from Harwich. It celebrates and commemorates the HMS Ganges which was used as a training ship for the Navy. At least one of the volunteers was trained there and acted as a lively, interesting host. Exhibits include models, photos, badges and medals. There is a small amount of memorabilia for sale. Free entry, but remember to put something in the box.
My experience is not about the museum, but of the 12 months spent there, as a boy seaman in 1963, immediately from school. Life was very strict, as you`d expect in the forces,we had to climb the mast, about 150 feet high, very good views. If one was really a bad boy, the cane was given, across the buttocks 2 marks crossed,2 shillings and six pence was given as a reward, but this rarely happened;the process was called Cuts of the Cane,I did not have it, coward! It certainly made a boy into a man! I have no regrets, only that places like that should be kept open for our youngsters who have trouble with the day to day way of life!!
My husband was at HMS Ganges in September 1962. He was very emotional to see all the memorabilia. A pleasant 90 minutes spent in the museum. The volunteers were very helpful.
Plenty of parking for a visit to the museum. I only went into the museum, didn't walk in the grounds not sure if you actually can?! Extremely informative inside with a vast collection of photos, books, uniforms, data...everything to interest the History/Navy buff. Well worth an hour or two.
