More “style” than functionnnThe good stuff - Large rooms, comfortable beds, helpful staff, excellent location.nThe misses are in the details - There seems to be an attempt at trendy decor, but little attention has been paid to the details of how a guest would actually use a room. The biggest short-coming is the lighting. There are relatively few overhead lights, and those that exist seem randomly placed. The bedside lighting looks as though you could adjust it’s direction, but you can’t - the result is poor reading lighting.nnOur spacious black-tiled bath had one, maybe two overhead lights, not enough, and not placed well-enough to light the mirror so you might be able to see what you’re doing for make-up or other personal grooming. It was almost as if you were in cave.nnThe one towel rack was far from both the sink, and the bath, there were no additional towel bars where you actually might want to use a towel.nnBathroom fixtures were nothing special, fittings you might pick up at your local DIY shop for a low-cost renovation.nnThen you have the shortfall of what seems to be the uniquely British regulation of no electrical outlets in the bathrooms except for a razor outlet, which leaves you managing a hairdryer at a desk, with one “trendy” little decorative lamp, plugged into a random socket where the cord is bound to be slapping against the desk or chair, while you dry your hair in front of a decorative mirror, unable to see what you’re doing because of the poor overhead lighting.
Stayed here as we were catching the airport bus in small hours. Check in etc is beautiful, staff great and a vending machine with travel accessories. Room was OK, small but had everything we needed. No view. Room service wasn't great, says on menu you can order from 9pm, was told you couldn't when called. Ordered toasties, took forever and when you open the door you definitely don't want to be in your bed when they come to door as you are the focal point. Lesson learned. Toasties were really good.
Everything was perfect at this hotel, other than a couple of small maintenance issues. Excellent central location. Lovely restaurant and bar. Decor is beautiful but starting to get a little worn in places, for instance a cracked tile on the shower floor and paint flaked off. Also, be aware that's because of construction works over the road, river view rooms aren't really a river view at the moment! But would still highly recommend if you want a central hotel with a bit of luxury.
Nice ambiance, staff attentive, food excellent but cauliflower with cheese was a bit undercooked plus didn't think it was necessary with the roast beef dinner as more than enough on the plate.nBut well worth a visit.
Beautiful hotel with your good ole Scottish building. Neat. Clean. Variety for breakfast. Friendly staff. Central to amenities such as train station, Mark's & Spencer, coffee shops, book shops, Post office, Tesco groceries etc
