Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa

Stayed for a short weekend with my partner. We had a meal, everything tasted lovely the restaurant was quiet would have been nice to have music on. My partner had requested lots of flowers in the room (said he would pay extra) however only one vase was brought up. He asked for the room to be decorated (as he planned on proposing) but this didn't happen. We had an amazing weekend though the room was lovely and clean spacious with amazing views. The pillows were not comfortable at all however and hurt our necks. We had spa booked in the hotel. We had a massage which was a little disappointing definitely wasn't worth the price. However the afternoon tea definitely made up for it. Hotel staff lovely and polite as well as the lady on the spa reception desk they would do everything in their power to help. The person on the main reception was very very very slow and became frustrated if you interrupted or hurried him in anyway. There were frequently extensive queues at reception so we found it was much easier to call down as someone else would answer We also got room service cheese and crackers which was amazing But overall a great weekend thank you!

Stayed here with my partner for 3 nights a couple of weeks ago and had a really good experience. We were travelling up from Cardiff by car and we didn’t want to be paying the £20 a night valet parking service. So we did a little bit of research for other car parks in the area and parked in the nearby pay and display (which we paid £15 for 3 days stay) which was a no brainer compared to £20 a night at the hotel. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and we had our standard room upgraded at no extra charge which was fantastic! Breakfast was included in the mornings that we were there so we took full advantage of a hearty breakfast before setting out for the day. Also every morning we were sat right next to the main big window that faces out to the lake. All in all a great hotel. Facilities were great. The staff were hospitable but the only let down was the £20 a night charge if you wanted to park at the hotel (hence the 4 out of 5 star rating). Just be aware of that if you do stay in future. Apart from that would highly recommend.

Pretentious and ultimately failing. Definitely not what I would describe as a 4 star hotel. The management deem it acceptable to sell you a room for the night at circa £150 a go, adjacent to a large noisy extraction fan and motor. The alternative room in this pile was very tired with wallpaper peeling off the ceiling. Breakfast both days was fairly cold. The evening meal taken was decidedly average. Only positive thing is the location, which is what they appear to exploit as they don't try too hard at anything else. There must be better for the same price.

Good hotel. Lovely food. Good location. Critiscms... room could be warmer but exceptional cold weather may excuse this. No bath in Feature Rooms which is missed after a long day out walking. Parking charge of £20 per night is excessive. Local parking available for £5.

Parking is crazy and be aware there is a £20 overnight car parking charge. They do take your car away for you and bring it back however. Pool and spa is great. Room could do with modernization but location is brilliant.
