I have made many visits in the past 20 years to this valuable and wonderful archive centre. The staff are always so helpful, knowledgeable, and approachable. I think it is a good idea to now have a readers card, so you can view the historical documents. Registration and printing of card took less than 5 minutes. The exhibitions that they also have are very interesting. If you have London ancestry, be sure to pay this a visit. Sure, you could look on the various genealogical sites, but nothing is better than viewing the original registers/ documents. It’s even fun using the microfilm readers! Lastly, not far from public transport.
The Magnificent Maps exhibition is very interesting and detailed. Worth a visit and it’s brilliant that it is a free exhibition which runs until 29 March 2023. The LMA is open Monday to Friday, but worth checking their website to see which Saturdays they are open. Currently they are open the following Saturdays from 10-4pm: 14th January, 11th February, and 11th March. When you arrive you need to sign in, and store all bags and coats in a locker thankfully the lockers are free to use and you don’t need to have any cash in order to securely lock them. The exhibition took us about 30-45 minutes to go around, and was very informative with a lot of information boards and excellent signage. They also run some talks about specific maps, but we had just missed one when we arrived. Definitely worth a visit, and an interesting range of multi-media exhibits including sound recordings in London over time.
Had a lovely tour and listened to some intriguing talks here. I visited for the Annual Huntley memorial lecture and had a lovely day on the whole. I would recommend that the credentials of guest speakers are better screened as an incident occured on the day during a sessional workshop in which a group 'ganged up' against an individual which saw them verbally attacking her and making outlandish accusations to humiliate and embarrass the individual. It was very upsetting to witness and I beleive better precautions should be put in place to safeguard visitors.
Fantastic special exhibit on Unforgotten Lives, which remembers selected historical non-white British people and their contributions to the country’s progress. Also a wonderful resource for all.
Very modern and fairly large archive. Great for genealogical research particularly for London ancestors. You can access Ancestry on site. However, you do need to apply for a visitor card if you want to research
Visited for research. One can order documents in advance after registering for a readers card. Staff very helpful and friendly. Wide range of records and reference materials available.
If this is what you like its pretty good. You can turn up, get a readers ticket and get stuck in with documents delivered in my case in 30 minutes.
I tried ringing but every option is not recognised , so unable to get even information on how to get there. Most unsatisfactory, I would have given their communication zero stars if that option had been available
Great exhibitions and reading rooms if you're into that.. staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Great times.
Very good evening excellent lecture and I caught up with someone I used to work with. Thanks to Matti for getting the tickets
