Maughan Library - King's College London

Story

The Maughan Library is the main university research library of King's College London, forming part of the Strand Campus. A 19th-century neo-Gothic building located on Chancery Lane in the City of London, it was formerly the home to the headquarters of the Public Record Office, known as the "strong-box of the Empire", and was acquired by the university in 2001. Following a £35m renovation designed by Gaunt Francis Architects, the Maughan is the largest new university library in the United Kingdom since World War II.Designed by Sir James Pennethorne and constructed in 1851, with further extensions made between 1868 and 1900, it is a Grade II* listed building. Inside the library is a dodecagonal reading room, inspired by that of the British Museum, and a former medieval chapel, now an exhibition space showcasing the special collections of the library. The library was named in honour of Sir Deryck Maughan, an alumnus of the university.

I got yelled at by a very rude staff member security? for walking in one of the downstairs OPEN rooms where some of the books are held, near the cafe. I was just looking at the books, how was i supposed to know people aren’t allowed to walk there when there’s no signs??! There’s not even a closed door, just a passage way which I should have somehow known that I’m forbidden from walking on. Incredible stuff.
This is one of the best places in London for students and professionals. This place is huge and so elegant.
Place was very large, ended up getting lost. Reading room was pretty tho and the selection of books available are quite extensive. Plus, can charge phone here and study in private with the study capsules
This place is one of the most beautiful university library. Ite near from Royal Court and Justice, and Law Society. As a part of Kings College library, Its very big library so please be careful and dont be lost during exploring. There are many book collection i.e. law books, social sciences, arts, economics, and natural sciences. I have exprerienced a 24 hours spending time inside. This library has some facilities such as caffee, private room, reading room, postgrad. room, etc.
One of the perfect places in London for studying. Can use the Internet, charge your laptop and concentrate on your work in the very quiet environment. I'll come back.
My favourite library and study place on campus :
Stunning architecture and really nice building. This is a huge library with plenty of study desks and computers and thousands of books and journals. The round room is spectacular, especially for studying. I also liked changing places every now and then, so I tried different study rooms. All are really good. Staff are really helpful and friendly. I studied there almost everyday including the weekends for one year, and I will miss my time there.
I really adore this library. The facade is beautiful. It has a little park in front of it so you can take your lunch there during your study break. The staff is very friendly and helpful and can easily support you. The library offers a lot of study spaces and even lends out laptops to students.
Has 5 male bathrooms but within these there is always an toilet out of order because of blockages and urinals are constantly over flowing - seriously need to upgrade the plumbing in this building especially given how much students are paying to use facilities like this. On the other hand it is an aesthetically nice building
Beautiful building in central London. Even if you’re not a student or an alumni, there is a small courtyard which is accessible to the public that can be a nice quiet place to sit away from the hustle and bustle of London traffic.
