Leicester Royal Infirmary

Story

The Leicester Royal Infirmary is a National Health Service hospital in Leicester, England. It is located to the south-west of the city centre. It has Leicester's accident and emergency department, and is part of the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. The hospital was founded in 1771 by Reverend William Watts, with 40 beds. Patients were forced to pay a deposit when they went in; if they went home, the money was repaid; if they died their deposit would be spent on burying them. When first opened, there was no running water, but there was the nearby brewery, which was used to treat the patients. By 1808, the hospital had expanded by 20 beds, holding then 60. In 1808, the first matron was employed at £10 a year; this increased over the years, and many matrons and nurses helped patients recover, by looking after them, and making beds. There are many separate sections in the hospital, named after royal residences in Great Britain and Northern Ireland: Windsor, Balmoral, Osborne, Sandringham and Victoria. The Windsor building was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1993.The hospital merged in April 2000 with Leicester General Hospital and Glenfield Hospital to form University Hospitals of Leicester. The Leicester Royal Infirmary has around 890 beds. Construction for the new emergency department was completed in April 2017. The new department has assessment rooms and facilities for elderly and frail patients, particularly those suffering from mental health problems such as dementia.

I feel very disheartened by the staff in the hospital. I have always stuck up for them and felt sorry for them but having experienced this last week with mum in a critical stage the doctor has been arrogant and not even willing to do anything, so short staffed. They have lost test results and instructions as mum has been moved 4 times you would think going digital this wouldn’t happen but it’s worse than having the paper logs in my opinion. I can’t say how disappointed I am with the NHS and the level of care and affection has gone down the drain. It’s like a bunch of robots caring for my mum in there.
It was the night before Christmas Eve. My GP had called and said my blood test was extremely low for haemoglobin. I was very breathless and feeling really dizzy. I got a friend to drop me at A&E about 7.30. I got to reception and was registered within 5 minutes. The waiting area was packed and had to search for a seat. By 9pm I went into triage room where nurse let me lie on examination couch. Then I was asked to sit back in waiting area. By 10pm I was taken through to majors and given a trolley in a glass door cubicle. I received 2 bags of blood overnight. All the staff were professional and really friendly. I was offered a sandwich, tea, coffee and biscuits. In the morning I was offered more drinks and breakfast cereal. I was moved to a ward where I'd missed ordering lunch so again the staff fetched me a sandwich. Can't fault the LRI and what they do under such pressures. Thanks so much. Listening to other people some were definitely not emergencies.
Worst thinking i came to uk by seeing this kind of place I never ever throught developed countries hospitals will have this kind of waiting period. Instead of improving your currency better improve your hospital facilities .
incredibly slow. my partner waited nearly 6 hours to be seen, got moved to a different area and waited for another 2 hours. ended up leaving without being seen as it’s so slow. staff don’t care, shrug their shoulders when you ask them how long it’s going to take. they moan about being understaffed, yet staff just stand around talking instead of doing their jobs. they all need to pull their fingers out and actually get to work, maybe then you wouldn’t have people worrying and in pain for hours on end. you’re not understaffed, you’re just lazy.
I came with a child with a high fever. Nobody cared, the waiting time is indescribable. Two consultations, an interview with a doctor. The doctor asks if the child has asthma, I reacted negatively and then the doctor gave an asthma spray which made my child suffocate. Zero response from the staff when I asked the assistant for help and called a doctor, he said the doctor had gone home. The baby came home with a high temperature and a new, unimaginable cough, and possibly with a new disease that she did not have before. Staff untrained, I have the impression that the only drug they know is paracetamol.
So after calling NHS 111 the service was very good and I was advised various options of which I chose to go to A&E at leicester hospital. So all in all the wait from the time I arrived at A&E to my actual departure was a17 hours in total. When I arrived at 11 pm it was incredibly busy I was told it would be a very long wait, I was called 10 minutes later for an ECG and given the results and told to go back and wait , so hours went by until my name was called for blood tests, examinations X-rays etc, there was access to free drinks £machine coffee tea hot chocolate and also free sandwiches for folk waiting endless hours , the doctors nurses and the other staff cleaners worked tirelessly. The care I received was second to none yes I did have to wait hours but I received all the procedures to check my symptoms Well done NHS you deserve the pay rise and more .
Was sent to a senior consultant named Dr. Manjiri Kharre to have my anatomy scan during my 22nd week of pregnancy. Showed no professionalism at all - asked for a cup of tea during the scan, measured all the organs wrongly as she kept mentioning she was tired of sitting in one place and pressed my tummy too hard to get the baby to move. She went the extra mile to mention that my baby could have several diseases and issues and abnormalities without identifying any problem in the scan. I praise just the Lord that none of these were true and I would urge all mothers to be careful when they're told they'd be seeing her for the detailed scan you'll end up having the rest of your pregnancy in a state of anxiety, tears, pain out of hard wriggling - I recovered three days post this happening and worry. Also the staff at the NHS maternity care are really really rude. Asked to have the address changed and one of the ladies made a voice to show how irked she was at having to change our home address. We were also seen after one hour twice, simply because they misplaced our documents. God forbid I ever come to this place again! Gave birth in a different country and they handled the situation very very professionally.
Staff do their very best under extremely difficult circumstances, there are never enough beds or nurses for A&E patients, and seemingly not enough floor space for new beds as I was under observation in a plaster-cutting room, along with various other patients. At one point they completely lost my notes and didn't have any information relating to me, not even my name, which was a bit concerning, luckily I was awake and able to explain my condition to the nurses! Seems poorly managed and underfunded, although this isn't the frontline staff's fault.
At the reception they put wrong complaints in the records but the nurses are very nice and helpful , ladies at the reception too. Huge queue, we arrived here at 5:30 and the estimated waiting time to see a doctor is 6-7 hours. Wow
GILL SANDERS 5 STARS - I couldn't find a form on the website that was not anonymous. I want to say that I was in the fracture clinic on 04/01/23 and she went out of her way to go over some personal information there and then, I was due to have to wait 4 weeks. Gill spent 10 mins with me outside of my appointment slot and she has saved me 4 weeks of stress. Thank you, Gill.
