Kings Cross Hospital

Story

King's Cross Hospital, often shortened to King's Cross is a hospital in Dundee, Scotland.HistoryKing's Cross opened in November 1889 at a site in Clepington Road, Dundee. It was the city's first permanent fever hospital and was built by Dundee Town Council to treat patients suffering from infectious diseases, including typhus, diphtheria and smallpox. Until the late 1860s, such patients had usually been admitted to Dundee Royal Infirmary, although a temporary fever hospital had been set up in a converted building in Lower Union Street during the 1832 cholera outbreak. As the need for isolation of patients with infectious diseases became more widely recognised, some temporary wooden pavilions were built on the outskirts of Lochee and also on the site of what is now King's Cross for smallpox and typhus patients. Kings Cross, which initially had just two wards, took over their function. By 1913 King's Cross had seven wards supplemented by several a variety of ancillary buildings. These included King's Cross Hospital (West), built in 1893 as accommodation for cases of smallpox, with a small unit for cholera patients. These facilities were used intermittently until 1927 when the Hospital had do deal with an outbreak of variola minor, which was severe enough to require an additional ward to be constructed. At the creation of the National Health Service in 1948, King's Cross came under the management of the new Eastern Regional Hospital Board. This board decided to centralise the management of infectious disease at King's Cross, resulting in the closure the former fever hospitals at Perth, Forfar and Arbroath. Since the 1990s most of the hospital's services have been transferred to Ninewells Hospital. King's Cross now serves as the administrative headquarters of NHS Tayside. The hospital is also the site of NHS Tayside's Kings Cross Health and Community Care Centre, which offers several outpatient services including audiology, physiotherapy, dentistry and x-ray and is also the base for Dundee's "Out of Hours GP Service".

I visited the X-Ray department today for some tests on my knee and hands. The staff were awesome. The receptionist took me straight through and handed me a gown to change into. She had lined a load of gowns up on a radiator in order that they were warm for people who were visiting the unit on such a cold day. This for me is the definition of kindness and made my day. These lassies have a genuine need to care for others and look for small ways to make it happen. The radiographer was equally friendly professional and made me feel valued and well taken care of. Our NHS is amazing fight for it support it and above all else cherish these overworked underpaid angels that walk the corridors of our hospitals. Thank you ladies for all your kindness today.
Called up after having a fever for 3 days, everyone on the phone was lovely. Got an appointment and got seen by a medical student who was lovely and very nice. Then the main doctor seen me and was very rude and condescending, not sure what his name was but he was and big, old man with glasses. He said I was fine and told me to go home even though I told him I know this is going to get worse. Went to my GP the next day and she instantly told me i had tonsillitis and prescribed mr antibiotics. Everyone was lovely but that doctor ruined it for me, could have gotten a lot worse if I hadn’t gone and seen the GP. I hope someone has a word with him and he humbles himself.
I called in this morning due to a lingering toothache and the lady on the phone was very helpful. I was given an appointment for 3.30 pm and was seen by a lovely Dentist Caroline, and Dental Nurse Zoe. They were very kind and professional. Even the people from the reception are very friendly and welcoming. These people make me proud to say that I work for the NHS. You are all amazing, thank you for your service and hard work!
The DENTAL Team is very helpful and professional!!!nThank you for the dental team worked on Saturday 18/01/2025nAfter several months of unsuccessfully looking for a dentist in Tayside, they restored my faith and certainty that it is not people responsible for lack of NHS treatments,nBut the sick dental care system in Scotland that is to blame!
The dental team here are exceptional, specifically Ewan/Euan? unsure of spelling but his patient care was amazing and think it should be recognised!
