Holly Bush Inn

About

Welcome to our traditional 17th century pub with a fine selection of real ales, home cooked lunches, legendary Pork pies and a warm Derbyshire welcome.

Story

A visitors description;

The Holly Bush is an absolute gem. It is one of the increasingly rare breed of unspoilt traditional pubs and LONG may it stay that way. It has charm and character and atmosphere that so many pubs USED to have before the breweries and pub chains started to employ completely inept and clueless “interior designers” to produce a “corporate image.”

Not so the Holly Bush …
...
With its quirky layout, roaring log fires on cold days, a great ambiance and an excellent selection of real ales, it is easy to see why the Holly Bush, although it is a bit off the beaten track, has a high BITE rating and is a regular in the GBG. Abbott, London Pride and Landlord and a cider are usually available on the hand pumps plus Pedigree from the jug. Add to these a selection of well kept guest beers and the popularity of the Holly Bush starts to become obvious.

The bar snacks, which are ONLY available at lunchtime, are excellent too. Most are home made and home cooked from locally sourced ingredients. The home-made chips are yummy

I love heritage interior pubs , and this featured in my Camra pub. I also love real ale. I've been planning to visit for some time, even though it's three trains and a walk or bus. Fabulous interior, welcoming staff, good ale selection, plenty of outside areas , covered and uncovered and nice pub food. The cheese platter was . It's also worth making it part of a mini pub crawl by finding the Spotted Cow and Dead Poets.
This is my second visit while on holiday from Canada, and this place has quickly become a favorite. The pub is cozy and inviting, with a huge patio that's perfect for a beautiful day. The food portions are generous and delicious, complemented by an amazing selection of beers. It's definitely a favorite holiday spot and a local haven. Plus, it's dog-friendly, so there's never a shortage of adorable dogs. The best pub in Derbyshire!!!
This place is an absolute gem of a pub for drinks and food. I've not been here for years but never eaten only popped in for drinks every now and then. Staff are really friendly and welcoming, the choice of drinks is amazing, and the food was all fresh and really tasty. I would recommend this place to anyone and will be 100% going again.
Lovely country pub serving several casked and kegged ales. Some of which are changing guests. Really nice character and ambience inside the pub. Serves food. Cold and warm bar snacks available . Open for lunch and dinner. Pub has several rooms and snugs. Only drawback is the limited parking as the old car park is now used for outside seating. This may change in the winter months, I don’t know. You have to find a space on a very narrow road which isn’t ideal. Apart from that it’s highly recommended . Helpful staff and Dog friendly. Parking: Very limited parking on a narrow street
I am not lying when I say this was THE BEST Pub I have been able to visit In my Life!!!! The design and atmosphere was amazing, even The people Both guests and Staff were friendly!!!! An amazing range of Gluten Free most of The Menu could be made without gluten and Vegan/Vegetarian options I have to say I would not give It any less than 5 Stars.
The Holy Grale of real ale pubs in Derbyshire. If you like real ales/ciders, you must visit The Holly Bush Inn, Makeney, Derbyshire. It's a "proper traditional pub". Open log fires and the interior decor is probably unchanged since the day it was built. The food menu and food quality are both great. I had the "Big Bush Burger" I think it was an 8oz hand-made burger, topped with 2 pork sausages, gherkin, and enveloped within a brioche bun. Accompanied by homemade skin on chips, salad, and balsamic vinegar. It was AMAZING, and although I was choc a block, I just couldn't leave any..... I can't comment on the desserts, as I'm saving those options for my next visit.
One of the best pubs I've ever been to in the British Isles. Pub nirvana? Must be close. 3 fires crackling, cosiest interior and tasteful extension, busy hubbub even on a Monday. Great pub grub that is customer not corporate focused. Great beer selection for a rural pub. This may be... Nearly.. the best pub we've visited in England.
An old haunt from 36 years ago and it hasn't changed! Marston's Pedigree still comes to the bar in a jug, straight from the cellar and served at room temperature. Just as it should be Service: 5/5
Lovely place to have a chat with friends and some drinks. Proper classic pub energy. There's a darts board and plenty of outdoor space. Love the decor!Service: 5/5
Exactly what a pub should be. Beautiful traditional decor - which shows it is definitely a pub not gastro nonsense. Friendly staff, great atmosphere and a bonus of a range of vegan options for food! Our food was delicious and will definitely be returning. If I could give more stars I would. Food: 5/5
