A beautiful and unusual Abbey with a very long history. Free to enter but donations recommended. For an additional charge of £3 per person you can visit the Crypt, which is really interesting and the original site of the Abbey. Lots of interesting information on display including interactive experiences for children. Friendly and informative staff. A very special place. The refectory cafe on site has a lovely garden area and good quality fayre.
I've been wanting to visit Hexham Abbey for a while now and I finally got the chance to yesterday. It didn't disappoint!nnStaff were very knowledgeable and kind, and we paid £3 each to go into the Crypt. It was a great experience. The building was beautiful :nnThank you for such a great experience
An absolutely beautiful abbey, so very rich in history. A wonderful atmosphere here! The lady watching over the steps down to the crypt, was really pleasant and very informative too. There is a £3.00 for adults to go down into the crypt not for the storage of bodies, but for treasures! But it's interesting to have a look nonetheless, as back when the original church was first built between 672 - 674, both it and the crypt were made all with Roman stone from Corbridge. It doesn't take too long to look around but still, it's a lovely place to visit nonetheless, especially for the historical aspect. And then, of course, there's also the town of Hexham, with plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants to enjoy afterwards!
Anne and I had a good chat with a churchwarden who was friendly and very positive about Hexham. I explored the C7th crypt see photo and we both looked at some nice artwork, including the origami ceiling decoration - made by local schoolchildren, I think.nnThis place has a real presence.
Hexham Abbey is rich in history of the different centuries. The Abbey was made from recycled stone from Corbridge.nFor me it is the designs & architecture within the Abbey and stone work.nI wasn't able to go down to the crypt as I'm disabled, but my partner was my eyes and took photos for me to see.nI think it I'd the crypt which is the only Abbey to be mainly all in tact; and thd oldest part of thd Abbey. It was built in 674 by St Wilfred. The crypt costs £3 per adult and £1 per child.nIt took about 45 - 1hr to visit the Abbey.
