Used to go camping here in the early 90s and loved it. Went back about 6 years ago and it hadn't changed. I think Wally "the owner" will be taking it easy now and his son will be carrying on the friendly atmosphere

My partner and I went for the May Bank holiday 2011 to Grouse Hill for 2 nights . We turned up and was welcomed by the owner who was very friendly, but was charged £5 more a night than we was led to believe when booking online and there is a £20 deposit for a key for utilities rooms and a card to let you through barrier to go offsite, so £70 spent within 5mins of turning up!! However we found the pitches very well kept and flat. We took a tent and was told we could take any pitch we liked which was great. The site itself is very well maintained and the facilities were kept clean but in short supply for so many people! The building closest to us had only 3 shower cubicles for each sex which caused having to queue, something that isn't needed when the weather is rubbish (which it was) and when you used the toilets it hadnt flushed away the previous occupants mess which was a bit unhygienic, And having to take a key every time you needed the toilet or a shower or just to wash some pots just added to problems and feel this needs addressing and another method put in place as this is the only let down of this site. There seemed to be more toilet/shower facilities where the caravan sections were which was a bit bizarre as " Dont most modern caravans already have these in them??"..The Flask Inn at the bottom of the hill must have to rely on the people camping at Grouse Hill for a big chunk of its profit with it being in quite a remote location. Can I just say when you walk in the pub it says "A BIG WELCOME FROM DAVE AND HIS WIFE" Then you go to the bar expecting a bubbly fellow and DAVE takes your money and serves you with a face like a slapped A**E . Im sorry but people like to feel welcomed and if they aren't then they aint going to return to your pub. We certainly wouldn't go back there even though the scampi "Whitby's Own" was delicious. We think this site is ok for a weekend away and yes we enjoyed our time there and will probably use again for a couple of nights. But dont think we could hack a week of queueing for a shower and toilets and it would get quite expensive also £25 a night is quite excessive just for a plot of grass!!!
