I've eaten here a few times now and have not been disappointed. I have never booked. I just hoped they had a table for 2 free. I would recommend booking if you've got your heart set on a meal here, wanting a larger table, or it's a special occasion as it's extremely busy. I'm absolutely fascinated by the building itself and the history behind it. Do research it, and I promise as you sit there looking around, it'll take on a whole different persona. Dining is available downstairs, up on the mezzanine, and outside if it's good weather or you're just brave. Upstairs also has a fabulous bar, I might have missed a train or two trying out the gin collection. The food is traditionally German, the coffee is superb, and the range of beverages is overwhelming. The downstairs bar is to be admired. The facilities are ample and clean, you can have your coat taken to the cloakroom on arrival, and they can accommodate your suitcases if you're travelling. The staff are all fabulous, friendly, helpful, and with a good sense of humour. The lovely chappy in charge on the door had us in stitches, a perfect welcome after a long day and a copious amount of rain.
We had a fantastic dinner at the German Gymnasium with our two kids, and it was a memorable experience! The food was excellent—authentic German cuisine, which is a rare treat in the UK, especially when you're used to seeing mostly pub food. The dessert menu was impressively extensive, and everything we tried was delicious. The service was also top-notch; the staff was friendly and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it a perfect spot for a family dinner. Highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy a unique and tasty meal in London!
Our family recently dined at German Gymnasium, and it was an unforgettable experience! I had the chicken schnitzel, which was cooked to perfection—crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. For dessert, I chose the rice pudding, which was simply divine—a perfect blend of creamy sweetness. The restaurant itself is stunning, with a beautiful interior that combines historic charm with modern elegance. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, making it an ideal spot for both a family meal and a romantic night out. The staff were fantastic—attentive, friendly, and professional. They made sure we had everything we needed and were great with our kids too. I highly recommend German Gymnasium to anyone looking for authentic German cuisine in a spectacular setting. We’ll definitely be back!
I got the sharing meat plate can’t remember exact name and it was a feast. In general the food was a bit on the bland side, especially the chicken schnitzel. Also would appreciate more vegetables. But overall, some food German food in a pretty visually impressive building
Revisited the restaurant after a few years and it’s as lovely as I remembered. The pork knuckle I had a long time ago was so delicious I still think about it every now and then. I went for the chicken schnitzel this time and it was just as fantastic. They also have a lovely selection of German beers. The server was friendly and the food was more filling than it looked. Love the interior decor too. Solid restaurant with authentic German food.
Had a fantastic lunch on Monday. Welcoming and friendly service. Sat on the ground floor. The food was fantastic. The menu was varied. Good selection of drinks. Tasty desserts. Very enjoyable afternoon.Food: 5/5
Pretty disappointing meal - this place used to be awesome. But chicken schnitzel falling apart from the breading, French fries dripping in oil which was highlighted to the staff. Gorgeous building and service pretty good but food a massive let down given how great it used to be and the price. Wouldn't come back againFood: 1/5
This place was renowned in the 1800s for its gymnastic marvels but now has morphed into a two-floor restaurant. It should be proud of its culinary marvels and has achieved the incredible feat in managing to be unpretentious yet upmarket, serving fancy food but which is still comforting and filling. The building itself is architecturally stunning and filled with history which you can read about on the menu card, the owner has beautiful taste in flowers with a huge vibrant centre piece drawing the eye from all levels. The atmosphere on a Thursday night was buzzing: a surprising mix of business folk in their suits, couples on romantic würsty dates, tourists and some people who looked as if they were passing the time before an evening train... It is truly impressive that they managed to please everyone and keep such a lovely feeling about the place. The waiters and service is second to none - our Italian waiter with the silver monkey tie pin epitomised this service. He was charming and friendly, knew the menu well and appeared at all the right times. The food was flawless and very hearty portions which made the whole meal very good value for Kings Cross. We would definitely return and try some other dishes too.
Came here for breakfast and to wait out some time on way to Paris since it is close to the main international train line in London. It was a good breakfast with good service. They had very good juices and pretty decent coffee as well. I would return for dinner and drinks another time. The restaurant is very beautiful inside and is a whole vibe.
Great atmosphere and good service. The food was lovely but there wasn’t a lot of it. Four currywurst’s and 8 beers = £138. Central location and really close to the train station.Food: 4/5
