Florence Nightingale Museum

Story

The Florence Nightingale Museum is located at St Thomas' Hospital, which faces the Palace of Westminster across the River Thames in South Bank, central London, England. It is open to the public seven days a week. It re-opened on 12 May 2010 following an extensive £1.4m refurbishment. The museum tells the real story of Florence Nightingale, "the lady with the lamp", from her Victorian childhood to her experiences in the Crimean, through to her years as an ardent campaigner for health reform. Nightingale is recognised as the founder of modern nursing in the United Kingdom. The new museum explains her legacy and also celebrates nursing today: it is a member of The London Museums of Health & Medicine group. In 1860, four years after her famous involvement in the Crimean War, Nightingale founded the Nightingale Training School for nurses at St. Thomas' Hospital and the museum is located on this site. The new museum is designed around three pavilions that tell her story: The Gilded Cage tells the story of Nightingale's privileged childhood and her struggle against stifling social conventions. The Calling is dramatic and moving, explaining how Nightingale and her team coped with the crisis in the military hospitals where the legend of the lady with the lamp was born. Reform and Inspire shows the other side of Nightingale, the reformer who campaigned tirelessly for health reform at home and abroad. Highlights from the Collection include: The writing slate Nightingale used as a child. Her pet owl Athena, which she rescued in Athens and hand reared, and which became her constant companion, travelling everywhere in her pocket. Nightingale’s medicine chest, which she took with her to the Crimean. Contains a mix of medicines and herbal remedies, from bicarbonate of soda to powdered rhubarb. A rare Register of Nurses that lists women who served under Nightingale in the military hospitals in Turkey and the Crimean. Audio tours are free with entry and accessed via your own set of stethoscopes. New interactive exhibits have been created to offer different ways of exploring Florence's story and influence. Free creative activities for children are offered during the holidays.

Very pleased to have had the chance to visit this place. I’ve always looked up to Florence Nightingale’s teachings since I was a nursing student up to now while practicing my profession. Plenty of information and interesting facts are found inside the museum. Would love to visit this place again if I go back to London! Reception staff was also very accommodating and check in/ticket purchase was seamless.
Nice museum that includes a wealth of information. There are a lot of pieces relating to the Victorian Era, even an owl that was Miss Nightingale's pet and Exhibitions on sometimes. There is also Information for both Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole was very interesting and even though it wasn't that big. It is still one of my favourite museum's plus you pay once to get in and can go free for the year and it is not as packed as the other big museum's.
A most excellent little museum with a very good family quiz/ trail to follow & clip boards to lean on! Where else could you see Florence nightingale's lamp or hear her actual voice. So good.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

I am a nurse and always said that I would love to go here but never found the time. I had an appointment at St Thomas's hospital so thought it would be a perfect time to go. This museum is a lot bigger than it looks! It is full of amazing facts about Florence. I loved listening to her talking and being able to smell her favourite perfume. Well worth a visit and using a mobility scooter was no problem at all.
The host was extremely helpful. We were limited on how much time we had at the museum. The host explained that the color-schemes indicate different stages in Nightengale’s life. That made it really easy to prioritize what we wanted to see first. I was even more impressed with her mathematical abilities and her ability to visually present data.
I’m a nurse RN & I wanted to be there on Florence’s birthday 5/12. Bucket list item . The actress who played Florence talking about her life was amazing. Loved the videos & displays. Had a great time. Definitely worth seeing.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes

The Florence Nightingale Museum is a small but fascinating museum dedicated to the life and work of one of the most important figures in the history of nursing. The museum is located at St Thomas' Hospital in London, which was Nightingale's base during the Crimean War. The museum is divided into three main sections: Nightingale's early life, her work in the Crimea, and her later years. The displays are well-curated and informative, and there are plenty of interactive exhibits that make the museum engaging for visitors of all ages. One of the highlights of the museum is the Nightingale Room, which is furnished as it would have been when Nightingale lived there, and is filled with her personal artifacts. Another highlight of the museum is the "Nightingale's Notes on Nursing" exhibition. This exhibition tells the story of how Nightingale's book revolutionized the practice of nursing. The exhibition includes a copy of the original book, as well as a number of other artifacts related to Nightingale's work. The Florence Nightingale Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in the history of nursing or the life of Florence Nightingale. The museum is small, but it is packed with information and exhibits that will make you appreciate Nightingale's contributions to the world.
