Enjoyable rail station. Has two entrances. The waiting room is always clean and not too busy. Also has some nice shaded parts for when it is sunny!
It's a place to go. I recommend to stay at Hope cottage. It's a perfect place for a couple. The city itself it's so British for a tourist. The castle and the pubs worth to visit as well as the park.
So many frequent services to London; can be as frequent as every 8 mins in the peak morning rush. Train station has got good facilities: Starbucks, WHSmith as well as a few toilets and water refill station. Waiting room is comfortable and quiet with charging station. Much better than town station and anything we get in Tendring!
I visited Colchester railway station on Friday on a day trip. The station building is nothing special with the platforms served by an underground walkway. Access to the platforms is via sets of stairs though I did not see any lifts. The station is about 0.5 miles from the centre of the town and you can see why there are a row of taxis when a train pulls in. It's a choice between walking 20ish minutes with a hill at the end, a taxi or a bus though it's not really that clear which buses go where. For the first time visitor to such a historical place, a lot more could be done to improve the visitor experience.
Always clean toilets and safe stairwells going under the tracks. Staff are very helpful. Multiple cafes to choose from for snacks.
