Stayed at Close House when “attempting” a walking weekend. Unfortunately snow rather stopped play but we managed to make it through (although all but 2 other rooms had been cancelled due to the weather). Accommodation is lovely, and the scenery is too. We had steak a bottle of red at the No. 19 restaurant which was nice a good value for a place like this. Only slight gripe was the breakfast, small portion and despite only 3 rooms in use the sausage, small black pudding and beans had clearly been sitting a while and all dried up. Apart from that a nice stay.

Excellent venue. Played the Colt Course, was in great condition considering the bad weather we have had over last couple of months. Food was excellemt

I had a 09:40 tee time booked on the filly course and had unfortunately woken up that morning with a severely stiff back which was exacerbated by the 40 minute car journey to such an extent that by the time I parked up at the driving range, I was unsure whether or not I’d be able to play. I explained to the chap at the range reception my dilemma, decided against hitting a bucket of balls off a mat  and asked if there was a chipping area I could use, if the stiffness didn’t subside I’d have to forego my round. “Sorry, chipping area is for members only, there’s a putting green near the 1st tee.” I appreciate the chipping area is for members but would anyone really have complained if I’d hit half a dozen bunker shots to see if I’d loosen up ? I was due to tee off in 30 minutes so was hardly likely to indulge in prolonged practice. When I looked there was nobody there ! I should emphasise here that I love Close House, I stayed at the hotel a couple of times and stayed in the courtyard as recently as February. My wife and I love a drive up to the clubhouse for lunch and the staff and hospitality they offer is second to none. The food has always been, without exception, fantastic. And so, as someone who is involved in trying at my own club to encourage a culture of friendliness to visitors to our course, I find it depressing that the hospitality of the hotel to it’s clientele isn’t replicated to visiting golfers.  Are the staff in the range area not afforded a degree of discretion ? Maybe if I’d been advised “the chipping area is members only but if you want to  nip along and hit a few shots it should be okay if you’re quick”, I’d have appreciated the gesture and acted accordingly ? As it happens I managed to play ten holes, I decided to walk the longer holes at the bottom of the course rather than risk aggravating what was a stiff back due to a bad nights sleep. Considering the very wet recent weather, the holes I played were in excellent condition, the greens for the time of year were quick and a credit to the hard work of the greenstaff. This is the first time I’ve ever left a bad review and I want to highlight the fact that my overall experiences of Close House are very positive ones.

We stayed in one of the courtyard rooms. The room itself was huge with a big bathroom with a shower and freestanding bath. The setting was lovely and I'll be looking forward to staying there again

The room was big enough to be a house of its own. The bathroom was enormous and the bathtub held its heat amazingly long and the tile floor was heated. The restaurant served a large variety of meals. The male outside staff on checking in took no notice of us perhaps because we were walkers and didn't arrive in a BMW - wouldn't even direct us to the check-in desk. However the woman who booked us in got us sorted out and we were soon on our way.
