The hotel is ideally located, right in the heart of the city centre. A short walk to all of the restaurants, bars and entertainment venues in the city centre. The staff were friendly and the room was very spacious and included mini bar drinks and snacks provided at a cost. The bathroom was also spacious with a big shower. Unfortunately, the bathroom door handle on the inside was almost out of the door. Which meant that we couldn’t close the door through fear of pulling the handle off and being stuck in the bathroom. Despite the shower appearing to be really good, the shower tray was leaking and left a large pool of water on the bathroom floor whenever the shower was used. Also, the shower drainage was virtually nonexistent. The shower tray filled up completely within a few of minutes, leaving a very limited time to have a shower before the water began overflowing. In addition, there was no hot water on the second morning we stayed, resulting in a freezing cold shower to start the day which was far from pleasant. Overall the hotel was nice but with only 20 bedrooms to look after, they need to do much better and focus a lot more on ensuring that everything in the rooms is how it should be. Things like hot water and a properly functioning shower are absolute basic hotel amenities, especially when customers are paying fancy boutique prices. Rooms: The room was good but the bathroom was not! The door handle was broken, the shower leaked and didn’t drain. There was also no hot water on the second morning we stayed. Nearby activities: Shops, restaurants, pubs, cinema, university and the quay are all within a short walk. Walkability: Everything is within walking distance.
We were staying here for a wedding over the bank holiday weekend. The wedding was on the Sunday so we were booked in for Saturday and Sunday night and due to check out on Monday morning. On the Saturday we had a great stay, the room was lovely and the staff very helpful. Unfortunately, when we got back to the hotel after the wedding on Sunday our key card would not let us into the building. After trying multiple times and calling both numbers on the information sheet, we had to give up and ring round other hotels to find a room for the night. When we came back the next morning we got our money back for the night we didn’t stay but no other form of compensation was offered we still had to pay for our breakfast. It would have been nice to have received something as compensation. Overall, a very nice room with everything we could need. But could have better customer service following an issue.
I love this hotel / pub! Would definitely stay again. The staff were great, food delicious and with a good menu selection. The large garden gave me the feeling of being on holiday somewhere hot and sunny despite it being rather chilly and dull! Very uplifting. Then, the rooms; stylish, immaculately clean and with everything you need! Even with a complimentary port for the end of the night. All very well thought out. I love it.
Sunday dinner was lovely. Relaxing atmosphere, plenty of varied outdoor seating. Dining area in conservatory overlooking said garden. Food was fresh and tasty. I can only imagine the hotel's rooms are just as good. Great place and would be more than happy to return.Service: 4/5
10/10 experience. We arrived very late and the team were so accommodating to us and our little sausage dog. Big bed and bedroom with a beautiful bathroom with an excellent shower. I also forgot my earrings and the team couldn’t have been nicer or more helpful. Thank you City Gate and look forward to visiting again!Rooms: 5/5
Brilliant hotel with lovely refurbished bedrooms and the largest array of basket snacks and mini bar drinks you've ever seen in a hotel room, along with complementary port & homemade biscuit snack!! The staff were fantastic for our whole stay and Kirsty looked after us at mealtimes really well. We'll be back in the future. Rooms: Fantastic as described in main review. Nearby activities: Cathedral, tunnels under Exeter, quay for boat rides Walkability: Brilliant location right in the centre of town, very easy walking from the station, city centre shops, cathedral & quay! Food & drinks: Great food, well cooked covering both breakfasts & evening meal!
The hotel/pub was lovely. Staff we're very friendly. The rooms are rustic with an extremely modern bathroom. There is an incredibly well stocked mini bar and snacks which you can access at a charge. It was also a lovely touch from the hotel to provide some free small Flapjack, water and port!! It's a very short walk up into the centre where all of the shops are. Overall, I really enjoyed my stay and would definitely stay here again Rooms: Lovely rustic rooms Nearby activities: Very near to Town
We had the most wonderful experience with Lucy yesterday… she was knowledgeable, helpful, super friendly and kind… we then had the most gorgeous ‘butchers block’ sharing platter. We have an event happening at city gate and this pre-experience has us excited and confident in what city gate will deliver! Thank you Lucy!Rooms: 5/5
Really nice hotel near the city centre. Very short walk away from train stations Exeter Central and Exeter St David's and the cathedral. The room was a great size and very clean. There was also some complimentary port and flapjacks which was a lovely surprise when we arrived. The breakfast was really tasty and decently priced £15 for a cooked breakfast, unlimited hot drinks, and a small continental breakfast buffet. Only negative for me was that it was sometimes quite hard to find a member of staff. There was no one on the reception desk when we wanted to check in/out, but managed to get someone from the bar to help us both times. Staff were very friendly - just a bit elusive! Walkability: Short walk from two train stations, Exeter Central and Exeter St David's.
We have been to this hotel 3 times and always have a lovely experience. Unfortunately this time was not so great. We checked into our room and went straight out for food and a walk. When we returned to get changed ready for the evening a girl came into our room to give us flap jacks. She did not knock and even though we locked the door she came in using a key. She did apologise, however the communication was not great as she should have been made aware that we had checked in. Food & drinks: Na
