The Calder Memorial Fountain, is a tribute to Commander Francis Anderson Calder, and is a symbol to the city's rich moral heritage. The Fountain was originally built on Queen's Square in 1859. It was replaced in 1870 to make way for the building of the railway line to the quays, and relocated to its current location in Custom House Square. F.A. Calder was a retired naval commander, and was instrumental in helping to set up The Belfast Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He successfully lobbied for the act of Parliament relating to the cruel and improper treatment of animals, to be extended to Ireland. Water troughs were installed around Belfast for horses and cattle. There were a total of ten troughs installed around Belfast when F.A. Calder passed away in 1855, with a further 11 planned in the following 8 years. The cost of the memorial was met by public subscriptions. In August 2003, The Calder Fountain Memorial was restored, with the help of stone restoration expert, S McConnell & Sons. Well worth a look if you are in Central Belfast.
