The ruins of England's largest abbey during the middle ages is certainly worth a visit, if you are in the vicinity. It is spread on quite an area, and one can easily imagine the sheer size of the place when it was whole. The history of the place is also interesting. If you come there with kids they'll love to spend time playing hide and seek, as this an amazing spot for that. You can also just take some time to rest in the serene atmosphere the place has. In Thursday and onto the weekend there should also be a small bookshop there, that is open for a few hours. There is no entry fee to the ruins and you can visit whever you want.
Hadn't planned to visit but were passing and stopped to investigate. What a beautiful place. Dogs were allowed in so we had a good walk round and enjoyed the exhibition too. It was an amazing place. To think that it was Henry VIII that brought about its ruin was amazing. There weren't many visitors when we were there and it was peaceful and tranquil. A great place to imagine the past.
Highly recommend a visit here, it’s NationalTrust so helps if you are a member or else it will cost to get in. Great cafes on site of course. The abbey is great to walk round, as are the other grounds on-site. Lots of great photo opportunities and just great for a leisurely walk.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
We booked a table for lunch on the way home from the North East. The Byland Abbey Inn was opposite the ruins of Byland Abbey. We had great views and watch people wandering round the monument. We were served by the friendly staff. They took our order before we proceeded to pick a table by the window. There were plenty of tables and lots on the menu to choose from! The food came pretty quickly and was fresh and hot! They were dog friendly too! Many pooches came with their owners to get hydrated and protection from the strong winds!! The pub seemed very popular with walkers. Plenty of parking at the back!
Byland Abbey is a hidden gem. The Abbey up the road is more advertised and you pay to enter. Byland is free. The car park is very small so get there early. The Abbey is massive. It takes longer than expected to walk round and ready the history. Bonus to see a field of cows with their young and a bull running round them. I would really recommend visiting here. English heritage have done a great job. The small museum was closed which was a shame.
Just under 10 miles from its more illustrious neighbour Rievaulx , this is another ruined abbey looked after by English heritage. There is a small car park and a pub near by and a museum on site though this wasn't open on the day I was there. This rui is well worth a visit , the ruins are substantial and will take quite a while to walk around. This should be better known
Free to enter and a fair bit to explore. There are information boards and you can get a guide book from other English Heritage sites or there website. There is a museum but never seen it open. Small carpark so best to vist early or late in the day. There is a pub on the corner that does food but no toilets on the Abbey site. Could be tricky for wheelchair users
Wow! What an amazing place for a wedding ceremony! I recently led a wedding ceremony here and it was an incredible setting for it. The abbey was beautifully decorated with simple chairs, an arch and rose petals - it didn't need much to make it look incredible. Afterwards we had drinks in the cloisters, another dream setting.
Very still, peaceful. Great place to soak in the history. You can imagine the scale of the place prior to the reformation.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Another great English heritage site.. do nearby Rievaulx first since it's better documented and interpreted. Then you'll appreciate Byland first. It's even bigger but much less remains.
