Bristol Guild Of Applied Art

Story

The Bristol Guild of Applied Art, more commonly referred to within Bristol as simply The Guild, is a privately held department store on Bristol's Park Street in the UK. Founded in 1908, the Guild was inspired by the philosophy of William Morris, and originally offered a place for artists and craftsmen to come together, learn from each other and sell their wares. Today it still showcases artists both local and foreign, while also operating as a more conventional small department store.HistoryThe Guild was founded in 1908 as a guild in the true sense, a co-operative for local craftsmen to organise, work, learn and sell their handiwork. It was built on the principles behind William Morris's Arts and Crafts Movement and lasted in that form until 1918, when the enterprise folded. It was bought out by three local businessmen and turned into a fully commercial venture, importing glass from Sweden and crystal and pottery from elsewhere in the United Kingdom. Park Street has been the home of the Guild since its founding, with the modern-day premises located at 68–70 Park Street. Since the 1940s, the Guild has survived the Bristol Blitz bombings in World War II and a Provisional IRA attack in 1974.

A great place to find some interesting pieces of design from a variety of materials. As ever ,my favourite is textiles.

Very useful - not to mention unique and quirky - items for your house, such as cooking utensils. Great for getting presents for older relatives such as parents, uncles, aunts, grandparents ect. There are also very good quality childrens toys. Everything is a little expensive (at least for me, I was a student at the time) But I severely enjoyed going into this store. It's big, spacious and has lot's of great stuff to look at. I definitely recommend you pop in!

Stunningly good products and quasi-Scandi in-store atmosphere. Feels like a slice of Copenhagen. The candles and fragrances are a treat and the art upstairs is worth browsing. A shining star on Park St. I would, however, suggest that the staff adopt a less austere attitude.

Attractive windows, good selection of gifts, cards & design house items. Probably will find your gift there or treat yourself instead. How refreshing, it had been long that I didn't feel 'not good enough for a shop' from the cashier's behavior. Since I lived in Paris in fact. If the customer service had not left me feel this way I would have given 5 stars - their Easter selection is impressive at the moment. And long live independent shops.
