Blenkinsopp Castle Inn

Story

Blenkinsopp Castle is a fire-damaged, partly demolished 19th-century country mansion, incorporating the ruinous remains of a 14th-century tower house, which is located above the Tipalt Burn approximately one mile south of Greenhead, Northumberland, England. It is a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.EtymologyBlenkinsopp seems clearly to originate in the early medieval Cumbric language, probably as blaen 'top' + kein 'back, ridge' (thus 'top of the ridge'). To this was later added the Old English element hōp 'valley'.HistoryThe ancient manor of Blenkinsopp was held by the eponymous Blenkinsopp family from the 13th century, and they created a substantial tower house. A licence to crenellate the house was granted on May 6, 1340.An early account by Wallis, writing prior to 1769 and quoted by Rev. J. F. Hodgson, found "the west and north-west side of it protected by a very high cespititious wall and a deep foss – a vault going through it, north and south, 33 feet in length, and in breadth 18½ feet: two lesser ones on the north side. The facing on the western wall has been down beyond the memory of any person yet living."('Cespititious' in the above quote means 'turfy' or 'grass-covered', from the Latin 'caespes' meaning 'turf'.)A survey of 1541 reported the roof to be in decay and the tower not to be in good repair. The family, whilst retaining ownership, granted possession to the Earl of Northumberland, and abandoned the castle for their other nearby properties to the east at Bellister Castle and Blenkinsop Hall.

Generous portions for Sunday lunch. There was a narrow choice but the pork was good though lacked apple sauce. Service was a little slow, it seemed they were boxing up a lot of take away dinners which maybe slowed then down a bitFood: 4/5
We had a lovely stay with Gary and Carol while visiting hadrians Wall. The room was perfect and the food in the bar was excellent. The hosts couldn't have been nicer, friendlier or more accommodating. Highly recommend staying here, with the added bonus of a castle ruin attached.Food: 5/5
Great little b&b, its in the middle of nowhere but that didn't bother me. I had dinner there too and the food was really good. My only issue was that although the service was really friendly, I felt ignored during dinner but then it could be that they had a new starter so the other waitress was training her. But then take into account I was the only patron there! Service during Breakfast was faultless, the meal was substantial and tasty. Rooms were average size but very comfortable and welcoming. FYI the entrance to each room is from outside the pub. Overall I enjoyed my stay and would definitely go back.
Very clean and tidy, beautiful decorated, lovely food well presented, reasonably priced. Will definitely go again
Brilliant pubs top in motorhome. Friendly locally owned bar, and exceptional food. Motorhomers can have breakfast. Parking: Plenty space for >6 motorhomes
We stayed here in our motorhome. Lovely welcome from staff. Lovely bistro on site with plenty of variety on the menu at reasonable prices. Local beers also sold. Nice quiet site despite being so near to tge a69. Well worth a visit
Fantastic, couldn't of asked for more. The staff, especially the lady with red hair and the owners were so friendly. The food was really good, we enjoyed both tea and breakfast and the rooms were perfect. Would definitely go back!
Stop over from Scotland trip and wanted to see Hadrian's wall. What a perfect stop, great atmosphere, beer and company. Lots of locals join in at bar, good fun. Food is great, lovely steak and good breakfast, oh rooms great and clean.....would go again Food: 5/5
