If you're looking for BnB accommodation with good access to Hadrian's Wall then Ashcroft House is probably the best in Haltwhistle and may even be the best in the entire area – although I haven't tried them out. Haltwhistle is a small town that seems to have a lot of B&Bs and pubs but for some reason rather doesn't appear to have exploited its proximity to Hadrian's Wall – or if it has, then it has tried and failed. There really is a lot of potential here. There's a rail service directly into the town from Carlisle or Newcastle and there are bus services including the A.D.122 which is the bus which runs a substantial length of Hadrian's Wall – at least the interesting parts anyway. Ashcroft House is a large house. I don't know when it was built but there are a couple of extensions built onto it so that the accommodation is quite substantial. I don't know how big all the rooms are but some of them are really pretty big and with good views onto the back garden and across the countryside. The accommodation is extremely quiet because it is off the main road but even if it was on the main road, everything is very quiet in Haltwhistle. The ensuite shower is excellent with good hot water and pumped through at high pressure. The accommodation is extremely clean. The rooms have have large flatscreen television sets if that's what you want and you aren't too knackered at the end of a day walking the wall. The B&B is run by a local couple who have been in the business there for around 20 years. They know the place very well. They know the surrounding countryside very well – and they certainly know their business very thoroughly. Extremely helpful. Lots of good knowledge and lots of good tips. There is no restaurant for evening meals or for lunches. No bar. But on the other hand, the village has lots of availability – although be careful because pretty well all of the pubs stop serving food at 7:30 PM! And the best of the bunch – the Black Bull doesn't serve food on Sunday evenings or Monday evenings, I gather. After that, you may have to try and get something to eat at the Centre of Britain hotel that has a single fixed menu – three courses for £21.50 – and they are completely inflexible and won't simply let you have a single course for a smaller price . If you want to find out more about this hotel, then see my review/comments about them elsewhere. Other than that, there is an Indian restaurant which has dismal atmosphere but not bad food and certainly at a cheap price – compared to London, anyway. Alternatively there are two fish and chip shops – yes, in a small single high street town TWO fish and chip shops!! and actually they aren't too bad although it's a bit slopped up. My first night in the village, I didn't understand the food closing times and I ended up eating chips and a fishcake with curry sauce sitting on a nearby park bench. It was delicious! Breakfasts are served at the Ashcroft House B&B. They are very good and there is a wide choice on the menu including all the elements of a full English breakfast and also if you want – kippers or haddock. They were delicious – although I found the haddock a little on the dry side to my taste. I'm not too sure how it was prepared. Vegetarian options as well. Unlimited tea. Great views from the dining room window. Everything you need to set you up for a days walking. The rooms are equipped with a kettle and a range of teas and tisanes. Fresh milk is provided in a small flask so that you can have tea in the evening – or when you wake up in the morning before you go down for – more tea (what else?) There is excellent Internet access with a Wi-Fi signal that runs throughout the house. I noticed that there are several extenders and in fact they seem to be three networks – two on 2.4 and one on 5 GHz. All in all, Ashcroft House is highly recommended. You'll find cheaper B&Bs around but I doubt whether there is anything this good and certainly the owners of Atherton House give the impression that they are still working very hard at pleasing their guests and getting it right.
