A lovely welcoming characterful hotel. The proprietors, Adrian and Graham, are really nice gents. The room is warm and comfortable, and a lovely Italian menu in the restaurant suited me perfectly with it's vegetarian options . I'd love to stay again!
A strange rating, as I have enjoyed each and every visit, this far. Dog friendly and great for a bar drop in. Not stayed in the rooms as live local. Wanted to utilise this place more, as Staff are great, very attentive and the food has been very nice, only thing is, they've opted for an Italian themed menu, which I personally found limiting, I like pub grub meals .. quality was very nice, but restrictive .. When I first visited here last year the menu had better variations. That said, I will continue to frequent here, always a welcoming environment.
I’ve been staying at the philipburn hotel a couple of months now and every time I stay my experience gets better. I wasn’t keen on the Italian menu when I first arrived but this has now been changed to a traditional menu which is really good!!. The staff are lovely and will go above and beyond to ensure your time at the hotel is comfortable and will do what they can to assist with any queries or issues you may have. The hotel its self is lovely and and cleanliness is really good, rooms are spotless and have everything you need for your stay. I’ll be staying in Selkirkshire the rest of the year and I’m looking forward to the rest of my time at the philipburn hotel and would highly recommend it to everyone!!!
Eggs Benedict are the highlight at breakfast. It’s all good in this comfortable quiet country hotel. We went for a weekend break in low season. Selkirk is a really nice town to visit, with other places nearby along the river Tweed. Walkability: Driving by car is almost essential.
Had a great two days here. Hotel is clean, well located and the breakfast is probably the best I've ever had. Would happily come here again in the future. A good base location for visiting a lot of great places in the borders. Thanks
We went there for lunch on the New Year’s Day because all restaurants around the town were closed. It was very quiet and the staff were very friendly. We ordered some burgers, sandwich and pizza as well as kid's fish & chips. All the food was tasty with the right portion and fires were crunchy, except the fish was a bit fishy and we couldn’t finish it. That’s the reason why I gave it 4 stars.
Christmas Dinner in a fantastic friendly environment from start to finish, a very slick well oil machine all the staff so very very helpfull polite a credit to the hotel. At every turn the little touches canopies on arrival Salmon balonies ,orange prosecco, the table presentation was stunning Thank you thank you thank for a very memorable enjoyable Christmas 10 out 10 5 stars are not enough. Every one's food was fantastic presentation was very impressive also. Hopefully see you again very soon.
When we found that our preferred lunchtime spot was fully booked on Saturday, we decided to drive across to Selkirk and revisit the Philipburn. Compared to previous visits, some years ago, when I was a fairly regular visitor, our Saturday lunch was a rather disappointing affair. For one, the menu has switched from traditional Scottish fare to a fairly limited Italian style menu, and was missing some of the choices shown on their website menu. For a weekend, the restaurant and bar area was quite empty, with just one other table occupied. Our lunch order was, 1. Deep fried battered cod, served with artichokes and fennel salad and tartare sauce I added the £2 extra for chips. 2. Cured meat board, homemade chutney, with sourdough bread. We finished off with 1. baked cheesecake with fruit compote, and 2. Meringue, strawberry coulisse and forest fruit, and a black coffee. The cod and salad portions were rather small, and the chips were very dry and over crispy. The meat platter came with insufficient bread for the amount of meat served, and although the staff noticed and returned with the missing olives, the homemade chutney never materialised. The deserts were fairly unremarkable. But, and unforgivable for an Italian menu, the coffee, despite being served in a cafetiere, was of the instant variety. On Googling up the Philipburn Hotel later, I saw that it had recently changed hands, so, to be fair, it may be that the new owners are still settling in. It certainly won't be replacing our usual local dining out venues, at least not yet.
Attended a function here, room was booked by a friend for the event itself. The walk to the entrance was lovely. There was FREE parking near the entrance itself and was quite easy to find. Our function room was absolutely spotless! Well cleaned, well kept! Staff were very lovely and when we had a question they were very helpful too. Big enough for us all and more. Great value for money. Local too. The event was only on for a few hours but that was enough to take in the views, area and location as well as do the event. Didn’t stay in a bedroom, but rated the eventroom we were in for the function. Overall would go here again for an event or even to stay! Highly recommend Nearby activities: Great nearby attractions within a couple miles, one of which is the salmon jumping really close to here!
Lovely hotel with character in beautiful grounds. Staff were amazing and seemed very happy unlike some places we’ve stayed. Very good breakfast cooked to order. Bathroom a bit dated with leaky shower screen over the bath. Would help if replaced by a walk-in shower and multipanels. Would definitely stay here again.Rooms: 4/5
