How amazing that this burial site still exists after 5,000 years. And we can walk in the footsteps of those peoples. The Knap is on an exposed ridge line and is along the Cotswold Way making it a very good test stop. It’s a beautiful landscape but very exposed to the elements.
It's a very hard walk uphill to get there. But worth it. Vews are spectacular. Monument very well keptVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Fascinating 5500 years old burial mount on top of the hill. The car park is only a lay by, it's easy to miss it and only is enough place for about 5 cars. It is about 20 mins walk to the mount through a hill and a wood. There was a kind of running competititon and looked like you could follow a footpath and make some sort of loop if you are up for longer walks. There is no entrance fee or anything like that.
One of the more preserved barros of English heritage. You can actually walk on the barrow and see the barrow entrances. One downside is that no public transport available to get here. You either take a car or cycle through hills to get here like what I didVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
It is quite the hill to climb but worth it. The sense of history is amazing and the amount of time that has flowed around this barrow is insane. Park in the 'official parking spot', walk up the hill, all the way up!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Interesting long barrow, with a fascinating history. It's a 20 min uphill walk to get there, but the walk is pleasant and the view is fantastic.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Definitely a good walk to the top, but it's totally worth it. Be careful as several places are on a fairly deep incline. Can be extremely muddy on path and very windy at top, so dress accordingly. This barrow is massive and in excellent condition, therefore giving you a wonderful glimpse into the past. This place is definitely worth a visit. We stayed a couple of hours and that included walk time. There is limited parking at the beginning of the trail bottom of hill on side of road.
A serene place nestled on the top of hill. It has been well restored in the 1960s. There are 3 chambers you can enter all are quite small. It has a peaceful ambiance about the site. It alignment is just off North so probably aligned to the constellation of Cygnus but I left my Compass in the car so not exactly sure but it looks close. Well worth the visit
This barrow is over 5,500 years old, and was constructed by prehistoric people as a place to bury their dead. The remains of at least 38 people were buried within the four chambers and behind the portal setting. Radiocarbon dates show that they had died between 3,700 and 3,600 BC, in the early Neolithic period. They probably led a lifestyle based on cattle herding, small-scale farming and hunting.
Steep hill climb through the forest, and a long walk through the fields to get to the long barrow...but totally worth it! Gorgeous views, peaceful and very serene. Lovely walk around and an interesting read of the notice board. Highly recommend for keen walkers!
