We visited The Bear on a Saturday lunchtime with expectations that the beautiful surroundings would deliver an equally delicious dining experience. Sadly that was not the case.  For the prices being charged here the quality of food should have been far better than it was.nnIn addition the 10% service charge felt like robbery.nn-  We were not offered drinks before ordering food,n-  The waitress did not offer vegetables or potatoes to accompany dishes which came with neither, leading to a wait for fries,nn-  Seafood risotto with shell on prawns came without a finger bowl, andnn- coffee was served with no offer of sugar or spoons.nnWhen being asked to pay 10% for service, there's an expectation that staff will know the basics of delivering a good customer experience.  The service  we received was average at best.nnSadly our visit to The Bear was underwhelming.  It's an expensive pub that's charging quality restaurant prices with poorly trained staff and mediocre food.
My wife and I had an overnight stay with meal included. Room in the main hotel building a little bit small but suitable for one night. Only downsidecwere blinds that let in the lights from outside function area at rear of hotel. These lights were on all night. Food in the restaurant was enjoyable, the staff were very helpful. The location is good for wandering around the town as well as exploring the local coastline. Coastal path walk recommended. We would definitely stay again.
Only reviewing the restaurant:nnSunday lunch was let down by the beef topside - stringy with lots of sinew instead of marbling. Left a third on the plate.nnFor the rest: the taste combinations really worked but £8 for half a plate of tomato, rocket and olive salad with a bit of onion and two basil leaves is a stretch at best.nnThe drinks and sides were lovely but nothing special. All slightly overhyped/ overpriced, was expecting more following extensive word-of-mouth. I wouldn't visit again.
Staff were very pleasant, facilities were good, food was quite expensive but also quite imaginative. Service was slow but we put this down to staff shortages? and they were quite busy as well? Very pleasant outside dining area. A large glass of Sauvignon Blanc at £10.75 seemed just a tad pricey
