Barley Mow
"The Barley Mow is a lively and eccentric Free House located in the beautiful village of Bonsall.Famous for the 'WorldChampionship Hen Races', and for being the most likely place to be abducted by aliens according to UFO magazine! Locally sourced meat from award winningMaycock's of Holloway, great real ale & one of the best live music venues in the ared.. and the entertainment is free! We also brew our own real ales - the Chickenfoot Brewery is situated in our car park.We pride ourselves on a warm welcome... everyone is welcome here... we love children and babies... and well behaved dogs are also very welcome. A lovely pub tucked away in Bonsal Dale. A microbrewery attached - the one beer I tried was delicious. I only stayed for that one and a packet of peanuts but it was a great half hour sitting out at the front watching not very much go by. And a friendly cat too.
When described as quirky it is not wrong, good down to earth old fashioned English village pub. The landlady gave us a very warm welcome and the pub was populated by some very merry travellers who left not long after we arrived. Worth a visit but we only had one drink and returned to our accomodation as it was p*ssing down. I can imagine this place to be rockin on a night with music or entertainment which I believe happens quite often. Heard the landlady working out her December menu and seems like it's worth giving it a go. Enjoy...and good luck to you all in the pub.
Unique interior with iconic corners...Black Beauty corner. Loved it! Booked in for our Sunday roast, which was beautifully cooked by landlady Colette. She had given the chef the week off! The pub is loved by locals and it holds regular events to keep them calling. Contributes to the fun of the annual hen race too. Certainly recommend a call
Lovely food, had homity pie, it was DELICIOUS! Nice staff who went above and beyond to make our visit special! Well worth coming to this pub! Love the decor too!
A Quart of Midwives out in the Barley Mow on Saturday 2nd April. Landlady Colette gave us a massive group hug and declared to one customer that she didn’t want to offend so he should close his ears as she retold her own birth story… Back to the food and atmosphere… It had to be pies all round, there were the two veggie midwives enjoying a homitty pies which is essentially a potato leek and onion pie. The third midwife’s choice was the beefy pie and the quartet was completed by a chicken pie. All filled to the brim with luscious ingredients and served with lovely salad, mushy or garden peas, mashed potatoes or chips. I asked for and readily received a gravy boat for the homitty pie. Great chat and banter, quirky, eclectic decoration. Free band over the road in the marquee. To top it all there’s HEN RACING in the summer! This stunning village is sooooo pretty and a great base for walking and within easy reach of Matlock, Cromford and Bakewell.
A good well run country pub off the beaten track, beautiful in summer and all seasons came to a party here the catering and food was superb for us all the band was superb and the music we never stopped dancing bloody good fun and colette and her husband extremely good publicans who look after there customers
Gorgeous quirky little pub Lovely lunch, good beer and the landlady and landlord are ace.
We have enjoyed a very hearty Sunday roast at The Barley Mow today. The owners are full of warmth and dare I say, very entertaining. We will certainly visit again soon
This pub is very slightly "out of the way" - about a two minute drive from the main road, but well worth the detour. The food is extremely good and all made on-site. Look out for live music events, and the World Hen Racing Championships. They're also building out their own micro-brewery, so expect great things there as well. This quirky, independent, owner-run, delight of a find pub is set within the beautiful Peak District, but is a wonderful destination in its own right.
Great Pub, stayed in the area and walked down one night. Managed to grab a table as they were quite busy. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was great. Highly recommend if you're in the area.
