Augustine United Church

Story

Augustine United Church is a United Reformed Church in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is in a local ecumenical partnership with St Columba's-by-the-Castle (Scottish Episcopal Church) and Greyfriars Tolbooth and Highland Kirk (Church of Scotland).HistoryThe congregation began in 1802 in the Old Town area of Edinburgh and had a chapel in Chambers Street. The congregation outgrew the chapel, and in 1855 it was demolished to make way for the Royal Museum. The present building at 41 George IV Bridge was started in 1857 and completed in 1861. Its architecture is a freestyle mixture of Romanesque, Renaissance and Classical features topped by a three-tiered tower. It was made a Category B listed building in 1970. The building has recently been renovated and upgraded and is now called the Augustine Church Centre. The centre todayThe centre is home to a number of church-related charities and projects, including Christian Aid, Jubilee Scotland and the Edinburgh Community Mental Health Chaplaincy, as well as being the worship centre of Augustine United Church and the Metropolitan Community Church of Edinburgh.

Visited as Fringe venue. Good little space, with only downer being the big metal pillars running down the centre.
Nice old building, need some restauration.
This is a beautiful venue...it also has an upper gallery that is architecturally pleasing...good clean toilet facilities.Val Clapton
A lovely church in every way - welcoming and inclusive with an attractive sanctuary and good music.
Great place to organise your event
Great venue for fringe events!
Welcoming venue and congregation. Inclusive Church the s aren't just for show. Mental health ministry. Junior Church - not huge, but means know all the children as individuals and can adapt activities to their needs/preferences. Another reviewer mentioned images of death and torture - I'm wondering if review for different venue as I've been here regularly for several years and have never seen any.
Inclusive and a thoughtful church. They're very welcoming and sweet. If you ever feel like there's a church you may want to go to, this is the one.
I have visited Augustine United on a few occasions for Festival Shows and political meetings. Judging by its notice boards it has a very liberal agenda hosting the Metropolitan Church which caters for the LGBQT+ community.
I use this church on a weekly basis for a small meeting. Very friendly and helpful staff as well as a great administrator. Well kept and clean facilities. Would highly recommend.
