I've been to this museum many times. This visit was particularly for the radiohead artwork exhibition, which was excellent, and we also looked at the ancient Egypt and Sudan for our mummy obsessed son, and Islamic art sections which were great, too. Our son particularly liked the wooden shapes in the corner of the Islamic art section that you could tessellate to make your own patterns. You can't possibly see everything in this museum in one day – it is vast! Best to focus on two or three sections each visit. The food in the cafe is very good. Some comments have said it's expensive, but we are from London, so it seemed very reasonable to us! Huge portions. The gift shop is also worth a visit if you're feeling flush.
A lovely museum, free and filled with beautiful things, as it should be. I didn't get to spend as long as I'd have liked, missing several floors, but there was far more breadth and depth than I was expecting. The gift shop is very nice, has a range of beautiful items and a surprisingly pleasant price.
Great place!nThe Ashmolean Museum is an unparalleled treasure house and a cornerstone of Oxford's cultural identity. As Britain's oldest public museum, its grand Neoclassical building on Beaumont Street holds a globally significant collection that spans from Egyptian mummies and Cycladic figurines to Renaissance masterpieces and modern ceramics. It’s a place where you can stand before the hauntingly beautiful Alfred Jewel, admire a pristine Stradivarius violin, and see works by Michelangelo and Turner, all under one roof.nFrom a visitor’s perspective, its scale is both a gift and a challenge. To avoid feeling overwhelmed, you must be strategic. My foremost advice is to accept that you cannot see everything in one visit. Before you go, visit the museum’s website and decide on one or two core interests—be it the Ancient World, Italian Renaissance art, or the Islamic Middle East—and use the excellent free map to navigate directly there. The recently renovated Egyptian and Greek galleries on the lower floors are a spectacular starting point for most.nPractical tips are crucial. Entry to the permanent collection is free, but donating is a worthy contribution to its upkeep. Aim to arrive at opening time, especially on weekends, to enjoy the galleries in relative peace before the crowds build. Allocate a minimum of two to three hours for a focused visit. Do not miss the Ashmolean Restaurant on the top floor; even just a coffee here offers one of the best panoramic views of Oxford's spires—booking ahead for lunch is highly recommended.nUltimately, the Ashmolean is an essential counterpart to the university colleges. It provides the profound historical and artistic context for the scholarship that defines Oxford. It rewards a planned, unhurried approach with endless discovery, reminding you that this city’s genius extends far beyond its lecture halls and libraries.
The museum’s huge , we had the luxury of time so did each floor on separate days. It’s well planned so you can walk around in a seamless tour. Lots of detail explaining exhibits.nNice cafe in the basement and I could have spent a fortune on the shop!
I wanted to see the Tradescant collection, from the English settlement period of Virginia, Powhatans mantle specifically. It was an easy day trip from London Paddington station.nUt turned out to be my favorite museum! So many world treasures!nBeautiful exhibit designs, lovely lighting. The rich colors compliment the objects and time periods. Labels easy to read.nNice, quick-lunch cafe, big enough to rest a few minutes before going on.nMore manageable size compared to The British Museum.
