Very nice museum, no need to book in advance, we arrived at opening time. There are lockers of different sizes to put your items if you do not wish to carry them aroundnThere are sculptures, paintings, objects, a wide variety of arts for every sensibilities . It was a pleasure to visit and definitely worth the time!nnIt is very accessible and the café has a nice range of food, from sandwiches to dishes, and a nice selection of drinks.nnOne may wish to carry a jumper and/or a scarf, as some rooms can be a bit chilly in order to preserve the pieces.
I went with my son he is in year 5 Feb half term, we did the Gallery Adventure he enjoyed it, they have the replica of Zeus statue that is in Athens which is great! My son recognised it immediately. It's a shame that into the Gallery Adventure there is nothing for Anglo-Saxons and Vikings room as this is part of school curriculum and for that I planned to go there. The Ladies in the shop and reception of the tablets/iPads were very helpful.nThanks :
The oldest museum in the UK also happens to house a staggering collection of artefacts, paintings, sculptures and many, many objects besides in a museum where every corner and turn brings with it a new discovery. Whether you're well read on Ancient Egypt or Greece, have a fascination with the Gilded or Iron Age, want to get lost in a Van Gogh or Monet painting, curious about the world of stopwatches or clocks or just fancy a photo with a statue of Julius Ceaser - there's a Mariana Trench of things to see, experience, learn and do at the Ashmolean and when you need a break, the cafés will make sure you sustain your energy and if you're after a souvenir or ten then the shop has a great selection of items on offer - especially if you love history and books like I do. Unless you plan to zip around the whole museum, this will take up your whole day but it's absolutely worth it for the breathtaking amount of things to experience here, whether you come solo, with friends or even the family, it's all free so the only thing you need to bring is time and buckets of it. You won't regret it. Simply unmissable.
What a wonderful museum. As often with large museums, there is so much to see here that one could visit every day for a year and still find something new and interesting on every visit. The exhibition in each room is themed, mostly by country and time period. Sometimes it was difficult to know where in the museum we found ourselves as the layout is almost like a maze. But staff is on hand to guide you to the right area, or the exit, if need be. And entrance is free, so we will be back.
Great place!nThe Ashmolean Museum is an unparalleled treasure house and a cornerstone of Oxford's cultural identity. As Britain's oldest public museum, its grand Neoclassical building on Beaumont Street holds a globally significant collection that spans from Egyptian mummies and Cycladic figurines to Renaissance masterpieces and modern ceramics. It’s a place where you can stand before the hauntingly beautiful Alfred Jewel, admire a pristine Stradivarius violin, and see works by Michelangelo and Turner, all under one roof.nFrom a visitor’s perspective, its scale is both a gift and a challenge. To avoid feeling overwhelmed, you must be strategic. My foremost advice is to accept that you cannot see everything in one visit. Before you go, visit the museum’s website and decide on one or two core interests—be it the Ancient World, Italian Renaissance art, or the Islamic Middle East—and use the excellent free map to navigate directly there. The recently renovated Egyptian and Greek galleries on the lower floors are a spectacular starting point for most.nPractical tips are crucial. Entry to the permanent collection is free, but donating is a worthy contribution to its upkeep. Aim to arrive at opening time, especially on weekends, to enjoy the galleries in relative peace before the crowds build. Allocate a minimum of two to three hours for a focused visit. Do not miss the Ashmolean Restaurant on the top floor; even just a coffee here offers one of the best panoramic views of Oxford's spires—booking ahead for lunch is highly recommended.nUltimately, the Ashmolean is an essential counterpart to the university colleges. It provides the profound historical and artistic context for the scholarship that defines Oxford. It rewards a planned, unhurried approach with endless discovery, reminding you that this city’s genius extends far beyond its lecture halls and libraries.
