Museum of Oxford

About

The Museum of Oxford, run by Oxford City Council, tells the story of Oxford's history through our Explore Oxford gallery, a range of educational, outreach services and events.

Story

In a city of world class museums, the Museum of Oxford is the only museum to tell the history of Oxford and its people. Come and Explore Oxford in our aptly names galleries and find out about Oxford's past and present in two dramatically different spaces:

Explore the past - Walk into City Engineer, William White's office and step back into 1897 when the current Town Hall was first opened. Rummage through William White's desk drawers to find out what the City Engineer at Oxford Council was working on, check out his drawing table and get an insight into how much Oxford has changed since it was founded around 810 AD.

Explore the present - Continue into the modern Oxford Gallery and take a virtual high-speed bike ride. The four bike rides take you north, south, east and west from the Town Hall taking in the city's highlights as well as to places you don't normally get to see, including BMW's MINI plant.

The Museum of Oxford is so much more than our Explore Oxford galleries! With a temporary exhibition space showcasing top class exhibitions to an exciting education program for schools. We hold regular family activity days (check out our photos!) and have an exciting and progressive volunteer program. Our outreach services also engage local communities in their history, with reminisence sessions and projects that delve into our city's past.

The Museum of Oxford is developing so keep checking back for exciting news!

It’s inside the Town Hall which is difficult to find. Not much to see don’t waste a minute inside if you are a day-traveler.

Tiny museum, very interesting but hard to find and it is definitely over hyped for what you get.

Liliputian Museum, with only 2 small rooms. However, the City of Oxford is planning to create a new museum and asks visitors to share their ideas on the project.
