Williamson Park

Story

The Ashton Memorial is a folly in Williamson Park, Lancaster, Lancashire, England built between 1907 and 1909 by millionaire industrialist Lord Ashton in memory of his second wife, Jessy, at a cost of over £80,000.DescriptionAt around 150 feet tall, it dominates the Lancaster skyline and is visible for many miles around. It also offers spectacular views of the surrounding area including Morecambe Bay. The building is in the Edwardian Baroque style and was designed by John Belcher. It has been described as "England's grandest folly" and the "Taj Mahal of the North". The dome is externally of copper, the main stone used is Portland stone although the steps are of hard wearing granite from Cornwall. The external stonework is hung on a steel frame as found in modern buildings and only forms a weatherproof covering without being loadbearing. In recent times this steelwork has caused problems for the conservation of the building. Externally around the dome are sculptures representing "Commerce", "Science", "Industry" and "Art" by Herbert Hampton, who was also responsible for the design of the Queen Victoria Memorial, Lancaster commissioned by James Williamson, 1st Baron Ashton the previous year. The interior of the dome has allegorical paintings of "Commerce", "Art" and "History" by George Murray. The floor is of white, black and red marble.

Historic building the Ashton Memorial is beautiful. They have a butterfly house next to the memorial as well as a mini-beast house and various other outdoor animals. They have a meercat enclosure and recently have added some marmosets. A great day out with the kids exploring the park, seeing the animals, feeding the ducks and visiting the cafe. The staff at the cafe manage to serve a lot of people in a relatively short time as it gets very busy so all credit to them.

Great for kids to explore. Lots of paths through small wooded areas, with secluded benches for quite reading. Nice areas for picnics and some space for playing games. Old style lanterns. Quaint bridge over a large duck pond. Great view, though you might be able to make out the nuclear fission power station in the distance.

Williamson Park captures the quintessential essence of pre-war Britain. The Ashton memorial is a powerful reminder of the resplendent architecture found across Britain from our colonial past, presenting you with an astonishing view over to the lakes. The park provides many secluded walks, and is well structured. There is plenty to see and do here and is an attraction anyone should see when visiting Lancaster.

Great for the kids with the butterfly house, mini-beast house and nature trail. A nice place to walk around, great views from the top of Ashton Memorial - take a 20p for the telescope if it's a clear day! Nice coffee shop too

Dog and child friendly park with a decent café, butterfly house and dozens of interesting creatures. Food in the café is good and reasonably priced. Entrance to the 'mini zoo' is £12.50 for a family (Feb 2018) . Parking is free at the roadside. A couple of quid in the car park. Good morning/afternoon out although you wouldn't spend the whole day here.
