This is not a hotel anymore , it is a children's residential outdoor centre. It's got signage and is private property.Rooms: 5/5
A return visit after a few years and found updated rooms, a new bar and exceptional, well presented food both at dinner and breakfast with attentive service. Took the option of the evening set menu of the day, 3 good choices in each of 3 courses, at the single sitting with other guests. Although a stunning view, my room was a little cold with large single glazed windows and antiqued radiators behind thick curtains. Only issue, as before, was the awkward booking system on their own website, which showed availability but but wouldn't process the booking. Had to phone the office and negotiate to get the same price.
All the staff were very kind and helpful. Hotel is a lovely building in a beautiful setting. Breakfast was tasty and various hot and cold items were available. Swimming pool and facilities were great too and in general it's just a very relaxing place to be. Would definitely recommend and would stay again.
Lovely stay in a Castle. Beautiful scenery. Nice rooms. Clean and nice food. Friendly staff. Highly recommended. Update: 27.7.21. New owners have taken over and refurbishing, which was a bit overdue. Can't wait to try it again.
Absolutely stunning from outside. However not really to my taste inside. I just think its probably more suited for a older generation . Room was has everything you need clean and comfortable. Hower the breakfast was probably the best we ever had.
Very scenic, beautiful place to visit with a lot of winding roads leading to and from the castle. The local area is one we wished we could have spent more time exploring as it looked full of life and character. The castle itself is drafty in places the windows are only single pane and don't seal properly in some places but it was still warm in our room. Food was adequate but not great. Still enjoyed my stay. Swimming pool was warm and well facilitated, I was surprised by how nice the pool was to be honest.
Beautiful building set in lovely grounds. Very warm! Make sure you are early for breakfast because when it's gone, it's gone, no top ups, no extra tea or coffee, breakfast staff far to eager to get you to leave.Rooms: 4/5
A beautiful location but rooms in the main building a must and some are rather tired looking. Mealtimes a bit chaotic especially dinner - breakfast somewhat on the early side during the week, 7.30-9.00 so we skipped the first morning.
Our room was lovely, at the front with spectacular views and the bathroom was clean and modern. The water pressure in the shower was very poor though and some of the common areas are tired and In need of a spruce up. The food was very good indeed but the bar closed quite early for a hotel. Excellent value for money
The hotel itself is an amazing building, steeped in so much history and so much more could be done with it. We didn’t realise it is owned and run by the Christian Guild. Our room was very clean and modern, a little small for 2 adults & a baby - however, the cobwebs were immense - get the long brush out!! The receptionist upon arrival wasn’t the greatest and didn’t really know what was going on and couldn’t find anyone’s bookings - shame as first impressions are so important!!! The pool was great, as was the baby pool however, be prepared for the big hill climb we didn’t realise and weren’t told and carried our baby - we needed the pram! It was also very very dark on the way back! The lounge room was very dated not in a good way should have had the lamps on and the fire to create an amazing atmosphere On a cold Friday evening - but no it was brightly lit, no fire and not at all relaxing. Also, good luck getting a drink in the evening! You had to ask at reception, who had to call someone with a key to unlock a room with the bar in etc etc - again really not relaxing, order two at the same time! We didn’t eat here for our evening meal as the really slow bar service put us off! On a plus the breakfast was good and the staff were friendly and helpful - however, the high chair we were given was broken and a slight death trap as the straps were broken along with the top so the only way to secure our 7month old was to hold her in place!! The other highchair was being used by another family! The waiter did go and try to find another but was unsuccessful. We wouldn’t stay here again.
