White Hart Hotel

About

There is always a warm welcome at The White Hart, Exeter. If you are having a weekend break, a trip for business, drinks with friends or a family meal the White Hart is the place to be.

Story

The White Hart Hotel is one of Exeter’s most historic inns. While it is not the oldest Inn, it would be had it not been a family home and then a hospital before it become a coaching inn. The building was built in 1356 by William Wynard and was originally built along the medieval city wall (of which you can see throughout the pub). It stayed in the Wynard family for generations and was at some point a family home along with 2 children wards as a mini childs hospital treating victims of polio. Eventually it became an Inn. During the 1500s, 1600s and 1700s the building hosted many famous people of there times and most prominently Olliver Cromwell of which there is now an area in the hotel named after him from his stay. Today, the hotel retains much of its traditional hotel heritage and charm and yet offers the business or leisure visitor all the facilities and amenities of modern living. The White Hart boasts fifty five en-suite rooms, forty of which are situated in our extension and the remainder are in the old part of the building. Located in a central position within the old city walls, the White Hart Hotel is ideally situated to enjoy all the city has to offer, from the famous Gothic charm of Exeter Cathedral to the newly revamped Princesshay shopping centre. With a choice of areas to dine, an extensive selection of traditional pub food and a comprehensive wine list, all tastes are catered for. The White Hart Hotel for many years has now operated under 'Marstons Inns', which is a great 'Value' hotel & pub company.

The White Hart also offers Meeting Rooms that cater for small groups upto groups of 60 people. Also there is a new Function Area used for Weddings only.

The White Hart also boasts a lovely 'Secret Garden'. A small cobbled area with an ancient well in the middle. Lovely vines & grape vines drape the garden walls.

There is also now a 'Cider Bar' selling mainstream ciders on pump and great, local craft premium cider from the back bar. As this side is newly Refurbished it offers a slightly modern feel to the bar without losing the charm of this part of the building built in 1356.

Second visit to this place. Very nice, the 2 main members of staff very efficient. Unfortunately this visit was let down in the evening when the chef fell ill when we were due to place our order. Cooked breakfast following morning was very tasty. Definitely think they could do with more staff. Would still visit again as love the setting and very handy for places of interest!!
I'm rubbish with numbers and upon arrival, the staff on duty helped me sort my room and parking . They do an amazing job. Room was lovely and clean and comfortable bed. No air con which is to be expected for such a historical building. Can't wait to go back. Rooms: Very clean and tidy
Hard to believe this is a Marston's property. We didn't stay but had a drink in the bar and the whole place is filthy. Food underneath chairs that had gone hard it had been there so long and the seats we sat on had ground in grime. Looking up the stairs to the accommodation, the carpets are threadbare. I appreciate it's an old property and that's part of the charm but there's no excuse for dirt.
On Sunday 18th of August we were returning to London after a weekend in Cornwall and decided to stop for dinner at White Hart by Matston Inns. From the moment we arrived we felt unwelcome, the person who took our order was quite rude, the food arrived almost an hour later and we saw how local people were served before us even though they arrived later. My burger was overcooked and the steak was not tender. We spent almost 2 hours in that pub, even when it wasn’t crowded. Every time when I asked if the food was coming soon, they said I had to wait 5 more minutes because it was only a chef working in the kitchen. We left the place totally dissatisfied with the service and the food. To top it off, when we arrived in London there was no longer a underground service and I had to pay for a very expensive taxi to go home. In conclusion, the experience at White Hart was quite unsatisfactory and I would not return to that place nor do I recommend it.
We stayed at the hotel as we were going to a concert at the cathedral. The location was excellent. The is a car park at the hotel for £5 a day. It is a very good reasonably priced hotel. The staff were all very attentive. We would stop again.Rooms: 5/5
All around this is a nice place to stay for the night however our room was awful. Firstly the bed was massively uncomfortable the springs in the mattress made it incredibly difficult to sleep!!! 100% needs replacing Not normally one to complain as this was a good price stay for the night however this really ruined the experience Rooms: Mould in bathrooms on ceiling, and mattress was awful to sleep on
Poor service for Hotel guest. No staff anywhere in sight! All the staff were working at the pub. Reception was never manned and the only way to reach staff was to walk over to the pub, queue up with the punters & ask them to pls come over to the hotel Reception for whatever you needed! Noteworthy details: Un manned Reception Poor Hotel Service Large Rooms & Ensuite Bath Dirty Windows Clean Bed & Towels Poor Service Pay for Onsite Parking
Stayed here for a couple of nights and it was perfect, the staff are amazing and make sure your stay is a good experience. We will definitely be back. Rooms: Our room was spacious and clean with a large bathroom and in bath shower, the shower was great plenty of pressure and had plenty of hot water, the trouble with a lot of places these days they have pathetic showers. All the usual tea coffe facilities were available. The hotel is about to have a refit so should be even better then. Walkability: Short walk to the town, Cathedral and all facilities Food & drinks: We only had snacks and breakfast but what we had was good and great value.
The White Hart team in Exeter are the best! Organising our stay with Ryan was faultless with great communication throughout. Gemma and the front of house, bar and catering team were incredibly welcoming and catered to all of our needs throughout our stay. Nothing was any problem. Thank you all for looking after all 25 of us during our stay in Exeter.
I had a lush weekend here, a perfect place to stay, kind staff, good food, a clean and spacious room, I really couldn’t ask for more. Definitely worth the price. Food & drinks: Great food, me and my partner were always served swiftly after ordering and the food was always hot and really yummy! Noteworthy details: Really friendly staff, always available to help, it made me feel really welcome and settled
