I was at a nice classical concert in a small church just off Edgware Road organised by Chamber Music in Little Venice when I was looking up where to go for dinner later. I had never heard of When Mac Met Cheese, but it was not too far away and sounded interesting, so I decided to give it a go. After a short walk I arrived in this West London pop-up restaurant that specialises in exactly one thing: mac and cheese. As soon as I stepped in, I was greeted with a smile by a friendly waitress behind the bar. I was quickly led to a table by the window by another, equally friendly and nice waitress. Browsing through the small menu, I decided to order the classic mac and cheese and added pork and veal mini meatballs. A good choice! The mac and cheese was rich and creamy, with delicious crumble on top. The mini meatballs hidden inside the portion were a great addition to the dish. The house white, a Sauvignong Blanc, was surprisingly pleasant. Not perfect, but pretty good for a house white in London. The only detail I did not like was that once again, a beautiful wine was served in a boring glass. I understand that this is the trend at hip venues in London and probably around the world right now, but I still think a good wine tastes better in a proper wine glass. The highlight of my visit was definitely the dessert: deep fried Oreos. How great is that?! It might sound a bit odd, but it really is delicious. When I asked for the bill, the very friendly service continued first with a lovely hand-written receipt, followed by a guy who came over with one of these smartphone cardreader things. When you pay by card, you can even get a receipt via email - not that I needed it, but anyway a nice little detail that makes When Mac Met Cheese stand out. When Mac Met Cheese is a pop-up restaurant, so it will only be in this area until July and move on to Soho later in the year. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal there and think it is definitely worth the effort looking up where they relocated once they moved on. I am sure I will be back.
